Must be in minority like your buddy. I drove with it off every time I was in my M4. Tuned at that. 520 to the wheel. Use to do the same with my E46 way back when. Want to learn how to control your car leave it off. Doesn't mean you have to drive like an ahole. So you leave it on and how many times do you see TC kicking in?? Probably never so your not pushing your car anyway. (In general)

This debate has literally been going on since DSC was introduced around the year 2000.

Some drivers will always associate DSC with some kind of emasculation effect and some kind of insult to their driving ability. We'll never know how many crashes exactly resulted from this

Exactly, same thing could be said for *some* ppl that yell from the mtntops that they drive stick.

I distinctly remember a news article many years ago re a journalist about to be taken for a ride on the road by a race driver. Now, the reporter was expecting all kinds of hooliganism and speed antics but when the professional drove, it was all skillful but not excessive...the shock from the newsman, not what he expected at all. I believe partly the reason is cuz they realize no matter how skilled they are, there will always be many less skilled than them and one mistake is all it takes, even if it's not by them but by the lousy drivers. I'd like to think that the majority of professional drivers are like that, and that the idiot who drove himself and Paul Walker to their fiery deaths are in the minority. Take it to the track ppl, you Lewis Hamilton-wannabes.

The DSC seems to be really smooth when it's limiting wheel spin. I played around with turning the DSC completely off a few times........the car does a lot better job of controlling the wheel spin than my foot can.

I think it's faster, and safer to just like the DSC do it's job......

My mini cooperS on the other hand will almost completely kill the power for a couple of seconds when you spin the tires......that stinks.

But this 335i seems to be much more refined...it's hard to even tell with the DSC is doing it's thing

Black ice is simply frost adhering to the road surface. Stability control can help significantly if you start to slide. I've had it kick in on these surfaces and in RWD cars it's pretty amazing in it's ability to straight you back out.

+1 I don't get the other guy's mentality. It's like saying you're forced to fight Mike Tyson, so why bother fighting, just stand there and get hit lol. I personally rather literally wanna have a puncher's chance in that situation, and back to RL, have DSC on even if I come across some crazily wicked surface to maximize the chance of a recovery.

3 second push every time I get into my car, but I'll turn it back on when I'm on the highway or not expecting to push my car in any way.

I don't daily my car so when I do drive it some spirited driving is to be expected.

Unless you are drifting you car.....how would being able to spin up the back tires help you in any way when you are doing a "spirited" drive in your car?? I can think of a few situations where being able to slide/spin the rear tires would help (on the track)......but I can't think of any situations where doing that on a public road would ever help things out.

Yeah with the super sports 255 square I've only had it kick on in a straight line on a good 1-2 or 2-3 upshift. Never had it do anything in a turn. I haven't used it for about 18 months so I don't know/care what it actually might feel like in a turn. I have no issues keeping the car pointed north at 2/10 street driving.

I've experimented between DSC OFF and SPORT+ while on track and DSC OFF will indeed let the car rotate more. That being said, I was thinking of this thread today while driving in the rain in New England. Surely people don't drive with DSC OFF in the rain; right?

Haha I was thinking the same thing as I was driving home from work! I'm up in Rhode Island, I left traction & stability control on for that commute lol.

I can't speak for everyone but the 135i doesn't see rain. It's just my weekend toy, so if I'm in it, I'm out to have fun driving.

The daily driver and inclement weather car has all the nanny features and they stay on all the time. Not that a 280hp truck could get that wild anyways.

I tend to turn it off when driving a bit spirited, in non lsd equipped cars it engages the eLSD, maybe it's just psychological, but to me there is a noticeable difference in how planted the rear feels with it off.

Helps quite a bit when the roads are fully iced over, knowing how to drift is the key to transiting corners successfully instead of the slope of the road just dumping you into the curb.
Same when it rains heavily. Or on sand. Which happens here a bit.

Car has no idea where you are going, and near 0 traction surfaces give it absolute fits. It will apply brakes and stop you correctly rotating the car to the desired orientation.

I think most of us who grew up with crap tires and pre abs, (shoot I’ve had cars without power steering or power brakes!) have a little different perspective and ability thank folks who grew up with electronic nags and warning labels on everything.

That being said, I mostly leave it on, but in a rain storm there are certain turns where the concrete is highly polished from wear, and it gets turned off there. Or where the sand blows over the road. Etc.
it’s just a tool. You don’t need abs, you can stop shorter without it, but abs helps the other 99.999% of the population who don’t understand finite grip levels and so lock up and continue straight on panic stops when they try to steer. It’s here, and I’ve gotten used to having it though I do a better job myself.

I agree. The DSC does a great job of limiting wheel spin, much better than my right foot can...and I have driven big hp cars all my life. The DSC on my 335i comes on very smooth, you almost don't even realize it. Unless you are wanting to intentionally throw the back end around....I see no reason to turn the DSC off......
