Think? Family law is definitely skewed against men. Especially when children are involved. It's a travesty that custody is not started at 50/50.

Until family law gets changed, I will never recommend any guy get into a marriage. I've actually talked a coworker/friend out of the pressure he was getting from his long term girlfriend about getting married. All I had to do was tell him the $hit I went through.

I have a female friend that knows what I went through. Said it's screwed up and we, men, should do something about it. I reversed it on her and said, why don't you all do something about it? There are men activist groups that have tried for years. And look where we are? I even asked her why don't you do something about it? I get stammering and crickets.

Broke up with long term girlfriend in 2019 (12 years). Bought her a car, gave her a few other things to help her get to a good place on her own. Other than that I once bought a 125cc shifter cart for 2800. It sat on a stand in my garage for two years, I never drove the damn thing and sold it to some guy on CL for 900 who only wanted it for the engine.

Wait when those Hurricanes and natural disasters came. Did insurance cover peoples cars and pay out? Or did people literally loose there assets in that you couldn't salvage anything despite insurance?

I never put a dollar amount on the two "set backs" in my life, but I'm happy to say that I recovered.

The first one was being drafted into the US Army, serving 2 years and 8 months on active duty, including 12 months in Vietnam. The pay was less than what I was making as the janitor and apprentice technician working part-time at my dad's mom-and-pop TV store while attending high school and later, our local community college.

The second set back was when my dad died unexpectedly 3 days past his 55th birthday, leaving me to run the family business. We had just moved the business the year prior and temporarily lost some walk-in traffic in the process. I soon discovered the business was insolvent. It took me two years of hard work to get things back in the black. I put in a total of 23 years in that business.

Gov't runs the FEMA flood insurance. It's expensive and covers almost nothing. All insurers re-sell the gov't "coverage" for the same price.

The rule of thumb is it covers the cost of what you owe on your mortgage plus whatever they think your household goods should be worth. Reminder: This is the same government who thinks you're wealthy if you make over $40k as a single person.

However, there are also limits. $250k on house, $100k on belongings and $2500 on anything "valuable". Again these are hard limits on "what you owe" on your mortgage, not the house value.

Also it is illegal for any insurance company to sell you coverage beyond the flood insurance. The gov't doesn't like competition when stealing your money.

Maybe. My bride was 18 and I was 20 when we got married. We just celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary last month. I was in the Army when we got hitched, basically spending our 1st year of marriage apart.

Not completely accurate. You can buy excess flood coverage above and beyond the $250k for structure/$100k for contents. In order to get an excess flood policy you must have the maximum coverage from the gov't but once you do there are multiple companies who will write a policy.

Back around 2010 one of the guys in our crew on COD Black Ops was about to get married near the end of his senior year of high school cuz his gf pregnant, somewhere around 3-6 months. Even though I’d only knew him for a month or two at that point I told him not to do it, that there was little chance a marriage like that would last and sure enough less than six months later he told me they were getting a divorce.

I know someone who lost his beachfront house and cars during Superstorm Sandy, and didn't even get one night in a hotel from his insurance company. Last thing I heard he was couch surfing his way around Vietnam, teaching English classes for food and a place to sleep.....

If that was the case then he wasn't properly insured... which is not uncommon. I was under-insured for Katrina hence the multiple six figure loss but I did get the $250k for structure and $100k for content so we at least walked away with something. As for cars, we drove both our cars out for the evacuation so didn't lose one.

Depends on your coverage how much you lose, but in a flood you always lose.

In terms of the cars...My F30 was 3 months old at the time so took a big hit, and the 740 was 11years old so had low book value and lower insurance level so took a bath there too

In terms of personal property, total losses in most cases....you may have some luck with new items that had recent receipts- yeah in a flood you’ll have those avail-not! Reality is flood insurance only covers up to 100K in personal property, period. So unless you had private insurance on personal property you are screwed after 100k even if u had receipts. Now think about a high cost area like NY and how much things cost to repair and replace-massive losses

Couples do talk and mediate to some form of resolution; a happy marriage, an unhappy marriage, a disgruntled state of remaining together for the sake of children and / or finances. Generally though, these stories don’t get the same publicity as a divorce story - especially in a forum such as this.

But essentially, divorce happens because people change. That change is an inevitable part of life. A “perfect connection” with someone in your twenties or thirties, does not necessarily correlate to the same connection, five, ten, twenty or even thirty years down the line. We age and our outlook on life changes. It is as simple as that. Throw kids, finances, moving, work pressures, life aspirations and broader needs of extended family and friends into the mix ... it’s a miracle there are as many successful and strong marriages around, if you think about it.

I am not trying to be cynical- just realistic about the human condition of change and how that affects our pairing with a significant other.

If a couple can bear down a little adversity, early on in the marital years and come through it - I think that bodes well for a fulfilling long term relationship.

This. I have an acquaintance who I could see her marriage was going downhill. She worked part time and then went to 1 day a week (by choice). She spends money like it's water. Her Mom buys her expensive purses like Gucci, LV, etc. She ends up filing for divorce. She wasn't happy, he worked too much, etc. She is a willing able body and has a job. She posted a pic on Snapchat bragging how she just filed paperwork to take half her husbands income. Why? You have done nothing to deserve that. You have the ability to work. Your Mom got a shit ton of money when her parents died and she buys you anything you want. It's f'ed up and any shred of respect I had for her is gone. This isn't ok. I hope her husband has a good attorney and they don't grant it. She's also already in a new relationship and in love so why not mooch off your new flame? Pisses me off.
