I was entertained and it had some really great moments. Even though I watched it at home, I'm certain it will do well at the Box Office. Sure I can imagine adding or subtracting some content but overall, entertaining for me.

However, it really did not demonstrate anything new or groundbreaking. |

Let's be honest here, the only real good Matrix movie is the original. Everything else that comes after it is garbage especially this one.

I just watched it tonight. It was pretty bad. An hour in I almost called it quits, but about half way through it got better, not good, just less crap. I don’t want to spoil any of the amazing plot line for anyone…. but I will just say I could not stand the old lady. I mean obviously they had no issues replacing some of the main characters with other actors… could you not find an actual old lady to play that part? The makeup was horrible but them trying to act like an old person was even worse. All her scenes were cringe worthy to me.
I also found the sound production lacking, that or HBO compressed the shit out of it for streaming. Did not sound nearly as good as a lot of movies I’ve seen on the new setup. Guns and other sfxs were very muted or something. |

SPOILERS:
I liked the idea of him thinking it's just his imagination and he believes he's psychotic, but after that parlor trick, it's basically the same as the first film+whatever film(s) the Architect was in. Didn't like how they didn't use many of the previous actors and nothing new really happens, perhaps save for taking shots at what's happening in the world today haha. I guess we're gonna see another sequel. 6/10 for me.

Actually, wasn't the first film meant as a standalone? Seemed to me that they just made #2 and #3 due to $$$$$$. They were entertaining but I'm not a Marvel-shoot-em-up fan.

Dunno, but I’m fairly certain 2 & 3 were shot at the same time. So when they decided to make 2 they went ahead and made 3 also.

PS Just so we're clear, I meant the first one as standalone, not that all 3 of them were standalones

Like others have said however, it wasn't as mind blowing as the first, so I guess it didn't meet many expectations upon first watch.

I don't expect all movies to be cerebral but a lot of Marvel stuff is the total opposite of that.

Going to check it out tonight but after all of the reviews here not expecting much. Honestly only the first was truly groundbreaking, I very much remember it being one of the most incredible movies of 1999, which already was arguably already the best year for movies in decades.
I always wished they would expanded the story - something along the lines that the true reason the machines kept us alive was not as a power source but to study the rare mutation that manifests itself as telekinesis not only in the Matrix but also in the real physical world as hinted at in the previous movies. This both fascinated and terrified the machines and they became obsessed with trying to learn what triggers it and harness it as it becomes more and more prevalent with each new generation.
