I always used Shell V Power in the 35i during my 12+ years of ownership, apart from the odd occasion when I couldn't get it & I will continue using it in the G31 40i.
I have no proof but I suspect the use of V Power is why my old 2006 e92 35i was still on its original injectors @ 127 + thousand miles & the additional few bhp you get from using V Power is worth the additional few pence per litre. The problem with the Costco located near me in North Miami is the extremely long lines for their gas. Perhaps if they sold you their famous hotdogs with a soft drink while you were waiting in your car and burning gas I might consider going there.

I find that first thing in the Morning, before the Costco store opens, is a pretty good time to get gas there. Of course, if the Costco is far away from you, just going there for gas might not make sense. In my case it is 4.5 miles away and I can go there and back on electric only (530e) and then plug the car back in.

It is a bit further for me at about 15 miles away, but the gas is over $1/g cheaper lately. So worth the extra noise. |

i was going to say i thought the additives are different, maybe superior, maybe not
the car may or may not perform worse with cheap fuel the car may or die with cheap fuel depending on whether the fuel is contaminated most probably won't notice anything, but hey I put the best fuel in, fuel is cheap, engines are expensive! |

I let my costco membership expire. The closest costco is 25 mins from home. I have a Shell that’s 5 mins from home and another one 3 mins from my exwife’s house. So I hit Shell by me or her whenever I pickup my son for the weekend. Shell seems to be just fine. And I get 10 cents off a gallon using their card.

I strictly use QT when I am in town. I tried Shell once at a station by work, luckily only put 2 gallons in so I could fill at my leisure at my normal haunt. About a mile from the station I got a CEL and a drivetrain malfunction. I don't know if it was a coincidence or related to the gas but I just avoid using anything but QT now as it has done me right.
I don't think it was shell so to say, just this station, but I did find it ironic that the one time I used BMW's recommended fuel I had issues. |

I will go ahead and admit that I did not bother reading all the comments. If it one is buying a luxury vehicle, then why would he/she not put premium gas in their car. Why worry about x amount of cents one would save during filling up? It is like buying a high performance car and asking the sales guy about the MPG the car gets (this makes zero sense). Always go with premium for the best performance as recommended, I believe mid grade is required. If one is leasing, then who really cares, it is the next persons probably. If you are financing, you want the longevity of the vehicle, then go premium and change the oil every 5k miles.

That could be the sound of pistons cracking from preignition and/or detonation. Budget accordingly.

The E9X M3 DME uses signal data from the Coil Packs and Spark Plugs to monitor spark knock (preignition and detonation). This functionality is needed to retard the ignition timing IF low octane fuel is present. The DME software uses an ignition 'map' to alter ignition advance for fuel quality Octane. 91 RKI Octane (R + M)/2 is required but 93 is recommended for maximum horsepower and performance. High quality Tier 1 fuels contain additives such as detergents to keep fuel injectors and combustion chambers cleaner. Shell Nitro V-Power is a good example of some of the best fuel available on the market today. The E9X M3 S65 engine has a 12:1 compression ratio if I recall correctly which is very high for a street driven car. Moreover, the S65 is a V8 that revs to 8300 RPM. Translation: Don't screw around with crap gas in an attempt to save money or you might regret such false economy. Nuff said.

I guess it depends on what octane it's tuned for. If a lower octane fuel is used it will still drive, just might not be a smooth and most likely loose a little performance
