I have a serious soft spot for the double hinged trunk. Glad to see it's still around on the 2/M2. On a trunk note...how much does BMW negate the cost savings of a one piece taillight by having to engineer and stamp out trunks that wrap around the single-piece light? They seem committed to this on the 2/M2.

People aren't crapping on the car in every way, just the way it looks and this god-awful color. Performance and interior are outstanding.

What you proponents don't understand is we WANTED to love this car and buy one, and now are upset that we can't get over how non-M historic it looks.... we're trying to get past it through these online therapy sessions, but it's not working

Just factually speaking, it looks more historic than you think it does. The side profiles are almost identical except there is more sill. It's very boxy. It comes with standard moonroof. It has a manual. It has altered pillars to manipulate airflow like how they famously raised the rear trunk - this time for a different aero concept and on the front end.

There are many more similarities than you'd like to believe, you just have to be open to understanding them first. If you don't believe me here's an included pic - take a look at those giant bulbous fenders and blocky design elements.

Oh and let's not forget, it's the M series car closest in dimensions! The new M2 is the old M3. The new M3 is the old M5.

The colors on the M4 look like nonsense to me. That grey is terrible IMO - maybe I should head over to those forums and post crap about it.

Ooh Mr is defensive of the precious M2, I didn't say the whole colors were crap btw, I said the ZV is and I don't think I'm alone with this opinion.

You're definitely not alone. It was said in jest because every time we see a new "face" around here it's the same comment.

I absolutely expect 60% of people to look at my ZB M2 and tell me I'm an idiot or a p00sie for driving a car in light blue. That's the exact reason I find it a waste of time to crap on other people's choices or post crap about something we don't like.

Ironically at the Rolex 24 this past weekend, it was about 70% "ooohh aahh" vs "holy shit that's ugly" comments. At least from what I heard. More people complained about the car's boxiness than the color - which for me is weird considering M vehicles started that way (minus the M1).

The launch period for the car is over, it's time for everyone to get past the quick negative barbs and accept reality - IMO.

This is super helpful. Thanks. I was 22 when I bought my first m3 in 2004 (e46), so I am sort of wed to that design and proceeding evolutions. Never occurred to me to go backward from that point. So this angle makes historical sense, apart from the egregious tail lights and vertical reflectors. What about the front end, where does that originate? Why the open air intake on the bottom and the weird creases around the cheap-looking grill, plus the straight jacket look? And I still don’t like the headlights, although understand they already abandoned sexy, historic and gorgeous quad headlights with the 2 series.

If anyone livesin Northern NJ, you can go to BMW NA in Woodcliff lake and see the ZB M2 in person. They have two. Usually located in the lot on the lower floor or right outside the lot when you exit the lower floor.

The front end is extremely boxy like the original. The reason for the air gaps are more engineering-related - the oil cooler sits directly behind the splitter and the water cooler sits directly behind that. Because it's a turbo engine prone to heat soak they need to keep it cool. I agree it's QUITE large, but not the worst thing ever.

As far as other elements of the design, when you look at the front end (which I was quite critical of initially) you can see all these places where the different elements are "set-back" from the leading edges. From a design perspective it is actually quite cohesive and provides "movement" to the static design elements. Look at the air intakes and headlights just above for reference. In design terms, static really just means square and straight.

Again, at first glance the car seems like a disjointed mess. But once you dig into the pieces and think about a modern interpretation of boxy lines, it begins to make a lot more sense.

This is exactly right. Great and accurate analysis.

Too me, it's full circle, the last fully ICE M pays homage to its predecessor.

The pictures are worth a thousand words.

Thanks for this as well, I appreciate an understanding of the design elements that you articulate so well. I could be won over eventually, I suppose... still loved certain design elements from previous gen and find it hard to embrace it... but it is what it is.

Seeing this pic just pisses me off knowing the G87 would look amazing in Misano Blue…

This might be one of the best posts about the new m2. Definitely puts the new m2 in perspective. Can’t wait to see its lap times. Praying bmw makes a race version.

It doesn't matter how you get to here, directly or by a link on the home page.

I had not heard the word newbie for 20 years, it brought back memories of when I first started using forums in the early 2000s.

Back then, it was used as a bullying tactic by users with a higher post count to make them feel like the big man on campus and belittle the newer user.

Not trying to bully. You were telling us not to post on an article and to stay in our own forums, which is kind of ridiculous since you are new to the site. So yeah, just showing you the ropes and explaining the logic.

I would encourage any constructive posting.
My comments related to trolling posts that continuously clog up these G87 threads by people with no interest in the car. It was in response to another users good post.
