I’m honestly surprised they’re doing new colors this early, they can’t even handle the demand they currently have. It’s great they are and I’m happy people’s patience will pay off with more palette options but seems like complicating the process, even slightly, won’t get allocations (and production/shipping) rolling any quicker. But what do I know about building and selling cars.

easy way to move product. if they released all the M2 models up front with all the colors then people would buy what they actually wanted and hold it. Doing a steady release of better colors and trims gets people to trade up.

Makes sense. I thought that’s what introducing higher performance variants and to an extent LCI’s were for. Never really occurred to me that colors outside of an LCI were a trade-up enticement. Slick Bavarians. Not that I like the motives, but from a business prospective makes sense. Sometimes deep into my enthusiast enthusiasm I lose perspective that it always comes down to the bottom line.

It makes them more money. I think that’s ultimately the driver for BMW. They must have a healthy margin on paint jobs when people are paying $2,000-5,000+.

I think anyone purchasing a frozen (matte) color is more than likely aware of the upkeep, i do wonder about long term resale though.
I would have thought it made more sense to just wrap a car in matte PPF if you want a “frozen” finish, then you get the benefits without the drawbacks.
People keep talking about upkeep, but it really hasn't been any different than any other car on my CLA45. I had the front wrapped in PPF and the whole thing ceramic coated and it still looks brand new. Of course I only hand wash it but I do that with all my cars.

What frozen Portimao Blue M2 would have looked like. This or regular PB should have been an option imo.

What I initially stated, BMW prohibits the general public from touring their paint shops. It is a highly controlled environment to reduce airborne pollutants.

I have been to the Munich factory several times, but it has been 20+ years and automotive factories are retooled rather frequently.

I will reiterate that Plant Spartanburg, which I visit quite frequently, is currently the largest BMW factory amongst BMW’s manufacturing facilities. The general public is not permitted within the paint shop at that location. You will briefly walk past it during a tour at Spartanburg and see a very small portion of it from behind glass. I grant you that you are visually seeing a quarter of it. The same would apply to Munich, Regensburg, and Dingolfing. You are not physically entering the paint shop to tour it. Again, no one from the general public is permitted within the paint shop(s) as it is a highly controlled environment to reduce/eliminate air pollutants/contamination. Example, Dust/lint from clothing, dead skin, human hairs and so forth.
Here is BMW's press release on their current state-of-the art paint process: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...shop-processes
