The holes seem some what large, has anyone added extra mesh for more protection. I am in Colorado and the roads are full of small rocks gravel etc...

Please don’t forget to re-install the original rubber lip onto the Mishimoto skid plate. This is often times omitted. The front of the skid plate has a metal ridge which is perpendicular to the oil cooler. The rubber lip has a channel on one side. Simply lubricate the channel and pressure fit the rubber lip. This requires a fair amount of pressure. This lip assists in diverting negative pressure from under the car.

I never did. I'm afraid that it will sit too low and just get pulled off over a speed bump or the bumpy gravel parking lot I have to park in at work.

Saw another post about this but wondering has anyone installed mesh screen over the large holes in the Mishimoto? I have one on the way and some
Auto mesh. Was thinkin of drilling some holes and using aluminum bolts or even some zip ties

That's too much. The rubber deflector should in theory deflect air and small rocks away from the oil cooler (probably the original design). The "mesh" that comes with the skid plate is going to be fine to protect the cooler from larger debris that may pop up. I think adding additional mesh is just more hassle than it's worth to be honest. But if you take your car on gravel roads or muddy terrain or something, then I suppose the more protection the better.

I did it since I was already there, don't want to have second thought and dismount/remount.

Chose the easier way on the Mishimoto since there're mounting spots. I still have to put mesh on the Turner's mounted on my daughter's G42, that one needs rivets since the center is open just like our factory plastic piece.

I think using zip ties is great. One recommendation however, nylon zip ties tend to become brittle over time and may break. You can however use stainless steel zip ties, they're not that expensive, won't rust or break.

I don't have the tool for the metal ties, would you know if I were to use the tool, would I be able to tighten the stainless ties tightly to the cutouts of the Mishimoto?

They make ones that don't require tools and work just like regular zip ties like these.

I'm convinced this has become a contest to see who can limit airflow the most. Products like this that accelerate in popularity based on FUD crack me up. Unless you often drive unmaintained roads or race rally why limit the cooling BMW engineered and hasn't changed for several years running? M2/3/4 Dakar Rallye Yo. One guy hits a chunk of cinder block at 80mph and everyone loses their sh!t.

Installation was a breeze. I was quoted a half hour for labor. Everything matched up perfectly. The quality is great. The plate is nice and thick but not heavy at all.

Other threads have talked about skid plates not utilizing the OEM air damn in front of the oil cooler. This gasket is removed to install the Mishimoto skid plate but it is replicated to get the OEM air flow. You can see it in my pictures below.

Clearance is about the same as the OEM plastic skid plate that is removed. It might be a little bit lower but it's hard to tell.

I think it will be nearly impossible now for a rock to cause damage to the oil cooler. This is a no-brainer for $500. I wish BMW had done this themselves considering people are paying $70-80k for these, but what can you do?

I can confirm, it sits slightly lower than stock. I’m now rubbing backing out of the driveway, and wasn’t before.

For those of you that have installed it themselves, how hard was it? Just put your M2 on jacks or ramp and remove the old plastic one and replace it with the Mishimoto one?

That one guy was me, but it wasn't a cinder block, it was a half inch rock that did $1,600 in damage. I also know of 3 other people that have come to my dealership with broken lower oil coolers, one who had to replace his engine.

Is it our unfortune that cracks you up, or our attempts to prevent such unfortune in the future?

I know he wasn't referring to me. He was making the point that people don't need to make these mods because the chances of something happening are so rare it's not needed. His choice of words also exaggerated what happened by suggesting someone needs to hit a cinder block to do damage. None of this is accurate.

I referenced myself to show that people are not far removed from actual instances of damage and noted that it was a pretty small rock that did the damage.
