Yeah some of the most irresponsible people I've met in the Corps, ironically enough, were the senior enlisted.... Many are there because it's an easy coast to retirement, as long as you keep your ass out of trouble. In many MOS's, you can be a real lazy ass and still progress. Especially since we started having a steep decline in quality recruits (maybe because of the revolving door to Iraq?), and it's become harder for the Corps to hold on to Marines who, at the end of their contracts, know they can succeed in civilian life, as opposed to - you guessed it - the revolving door to Iraq again.

Regarding this thread, I just think it is absolutely uncalled for to have these so-called "mature" gentlemen call out these young kids and berate them because they are privileged in what they have. Hell, the kids merely followed along with the post and listed the cars in their households, and in return we get some "responsible" person calling them bums and jackasses. What gives? Your assumption is correct. I got out a bit ago with one hash mark and one rocker on my blues. I consider myself lucky to have had the experiences I did when I was in. The Corps and training to be a Marine provided me with a lot of motivation from within myself to be a better person. I agree that all the tools are there to become a responsible Marine, but life itself will give you those tools as well. They're different tools, and I did feel many times in the Marine Corps that it's a totally different kind of responsibility. Appropriate behavior for a Marine does not really always equate to what would be appropriate behavior for a non-Marine. In any case, the tools are all there, yes; but you don't have to use them to retain the title you get starting at the EGA ceremony. Unfortunately, the Corps also left me with less ankle ligaments than I started with ("It's ok; you have four in each ankle anyway. 75% ain't that bad. Take a Motrin and hydrate.") as well as permanent nerve damage in both arms in the short time that I served. But I am thankful for the good things that came from it.

Some of these responses are a bit over-the-top in calling out youngsters who are fortunate enough to have their parents buy them nice things. I don't really care myself, as a lot of these kids will never get off the teet, which I will never be envious of.... What bothers me, though, is when they try to pass the accomplishment off as their own.... If your parents bought you the car, that's cool; just don't try to act like you did something more deserving that the poor kid who excels yet can not have such nice things because his/her parents aren't well off.

I find it nice that you served, thanks for that. But now that you are in college (probably paid for by government) and getting a decent check as well after 5 years most likely. Why do you still live outside your means? Why live in a luxury apartment in such an expensive city if you cannot afford it on your own? I understand you may want to, but since you do have a job and get paid decently you should really be more responsible than that.

I am sorry, but I am not one that thinks just because you served you are better or entitled to better. I agree it is risky serving and everything but you ARE getting paid well for it. I still say thanks though as a lot of my friends serve and I know how crappy it can be.

I think this is partially what I was getting at. Alot of people get out of the military thinking society has some debt to pay them. This is simply not true, and the benefits for veterans are better than they've ever been. Thanks are in order for servicemembers, but the harsh reality is that once you're out, you're just another civilian and shouldn't expect to be treated any differently.

20 something, meaning in my 20s, genius. 24 years, 7 months, 27 days, 9 hours, 22 minutes and 54 seconds if you really need an exact number. Never did I state that I am better or entitled to better because I served. Nor did I even imply it.

Yeah, I do, from time to time; like when I receive one of my payments late, my parents will front me the money if I ask for it, and the second I receive that payment, I pay them back in full.
