Interesting time ahead, are saying EV vehicles are not the complete answer? Sure sounds like it.
Look at the new C63 sales, not good

It's the government driving this, not BMW. This move says to me they're listening to their clients, giving them what they want - as close to it as legally possible. That means adding hybrid components to ICE offerings until they're legally compelled to abandon fossil fuels. The compromise is added weight but the same or better performance than the previous generation. As enthusiasts, we have a lack of appreciation for the legal constraints they're forced to operate within. All we know is things are changing in a way we don't like so we attack the maker. I still don't get why weight alone causes people to get emotional when performance isn't affected, unless you're concerned about disposal/recycling at end of life, or complexity (points of failure) , consumables, etc. that typically come with increased weight.

This would confirm that the current generation manual M3 will be my final M car when I make the purchase next year. I'm okay with hybrids but no manual is an instant deal breaker.

I have like zero interest in performance EV's. They'll all do the same thing and evoke the same emotions, if any.

Not sure what you're asking but the S58 will continue through the end of G8x production. The next generation with have both hybrid and EV offerings. No detail as to whether the hybrid will be based on the S58 but logical given the S63 to S68 transition.

Mercedes needs to take note. BMW took so much flack for not fully committing to EV, and they were going to fall behind, but are probably in the best situation with regards to offering both ICE and EV.

Governments are also driving Toyota and Porsche, yet they understand that you don't need 600+hp to create driving emotions and the result is GR86 and Cayman with N/A engines and manual transmissions.

I appreciate that BMW is taking the direction that the future is in multiple power plants and not just BEV. What I don't appreciate is that he implies that for a car to be better every year, it needs more power than the previous model. I hope we cap this non-sense at 1000hp some day.

I think if M division created a compact and light driver's car with I6 and less than 400hp, I would say they are thinking outside the box.

Sounds like you are conflating time periods. Are you saying Toyota and Porsche have plans to offer N/A manuals in future generations (2026+)? Also, what's the aversion to HP levels? I sort of get what you're saying in that an MX-5 can evoke similar emotions as a 4500lb 800hp sedan. Unfortunately, regulations have made it near impossible to produce a simple drivers car like that in 2026+, especially for a large manufacturer. KTM and similar might have something in your wheelhouse.

OK, I am not familiar with 2026+ regulations and I don't know how Toyota and Porsche are planning to deal with them and maybe they will lose their way.
But in the current time period, they are an example of how you can stay out of the HP wars and still produce exciting cars while BMW (and others) needs 500 here, 600hp there, 700hp next. I guess I do have aversion to HP levels as it seems that manufacturers are just racing towards 0-100kph in 1.9 secs and I don't understand how that is the yardstick for a fun car.

100%. 0-100kph is a fools metric, the media loves it, and EVs do it well. I’m looking at a Handschalter Z4 for the wife, will probably be the last BMW of that kind.

Idk about this. I think they will water the ICE version to make the electric the relative standout choice. Is this definitely a full electric like tesla? What happened to hybrid talks?

If they follow Porsches route to reach compliance they’ll use bigger turbos/upgraded intercooling to make good power without WOT fuel enrichment.

If they are smart they’ll incorporate mild hybrid assist in the trans and a low capacity battery to keep the weight down.

I’m sure both versions will sell well but I am never buying an EV performance car.

I bet they will run them Both side-by-side as they get the momentum going for the full electric version that they will cut the gasoline if they don’t go to some sort of Synthetic fuel if it comes to market soon enough
