Yeah cant lie, im not so excited about the future of bmw if they continue to go down this kinda route. Love their cars but every year i see less of what i love about them.

Bmw had a large exhibit called bmw the future, which i attended. The primary focus of it was the introduction of bmw's panoramic idrive which will be in every bmw model beginning end of 2025. In essence the panoramic idrive is a short screen that runs from pillar to pillar across the entire dash in front of the windshield.

As you can see in the accompanying images, it replaced the driver information screen. That information is now displayed on the panoramic idrive screen in front of the driver, and then along with other selectable information going across the rest of the screen visible to everyone in the car. Personally i did not find the panoramic idrive screen to be an improvement over the driver information screen, and in fact, most of it other than what is in front of the driver, useless or a distraction to the driver.

This is depressing, but not surprising anymore. Absolutely dreadful.

I don’t like it but it’s less awful than what they’re producing today.

Just imagine jumping to drive off and being forced to sit through a YouTuber droning on about male 'grooming' products before being to engage drive...

What I expected from 2025 cars 25 years ago was totally configurable displays: it’s technically not a big deal and display tech has made it even easier. The car’s owner puts instruments, dials and buttons where they want them to go on the display area and select what sort of controls they have. And as they swap cars the setup moves with them. And if you want your display and controls to look like a 2020 model, then you can set it up that way. But 25 years after mock-ups of curved display surfaces and completely configurable instruments, basically, we’re still at the mercy of what some 30yo designer who only learnt to drive 12 years ago thinks people should want.

Honestly, for me the look and feel of our 21 X5 xDrive40i, mineral white with Msport and tartufo merino interior is gorgeous. The interior design and quality is absolutely amazing. I only see more cost cutting measures in each new generation of BMW.

Lightbulb

I L O V E the Display!

I am even somewhat digging the X version. That other one, not so much. But, I understand and appreciate that designs and styles change. It is what it is.
