Don't be too hard on yourself. No one got hurt and you learn a valuable lesson. I would have done the exact same thing and I would feel the exact same way you do now. Your story made me also learn something and if I come across the same situation, I will try to react in a way that will permit me to avoid a similar result.
Thank you for sharing your story and good luck with the repair so you can go back to enjoying your car. It takes a lot of guts to admit what you learnt and share it with us. Take care.

I think the whole thing is disgusting, and I have sympathy for the original poster. I thnk the response that you get from the cops in a situation like this depends heavily on where you are. As for where I am, the cops would do exactly ZERO to help. If ANYTHING, the victim would be harassed and charged with anything they could trump up if there was any escalation on his part.
I once had a redneck pos try to run my (new at the time) Impala SS off the road. I managed to get in front of him and engaged the transwarp drive. LT1 power will leave a beater Dodge Omni in the dust. After I got away, I found a cop and told him the story. He told me I was very lucky NOT to have gotten a speeding ticket and that he couldn't take time to investigate my partial tag number because it was the 4th of July and he had to write citations for people shooting bottle rockets..... Next work day, I called and complained to the Sherrif's office about the incident. I was told later that the cop in question was written up for his handling of the incident, but there's no way to know. File an insurance claim and make sure to give a very detailed statement. If a giant nameless faceless corporation with mega-bucks starts agitating for justice, there MAY be some. For an individual who was wronged, you might as well take a pee into a fan for all the good it'll do. Rawhyde PS Just to make it clear, I think the little SOB ought to be skinned alive then boiled in oil, but justice is seen only in movies and comic books anymore. |

It's that kind of BS that makes me want to sell my nice car and just drive a POS...
I had a similar situation happen to me where an uninsured dumbass rear-ended me in my Tacoma 4x4. Luckily, his car took the blunt-force of all the damamge, and my bumper had a little scratch in it... |

For future reference, calling 911 while following him would have been a good choice. Can't say for sure about Chicagoland, but here the cops will show up if you're following someone who's actively driving dangerously. I've followed three drunks with the 911 operator on the phone passing directions to the cops. All three times the cops met up with me and pulled over the driver. Good luck. Hope the damage is very minor. |

I applaud you for doing the right thing... you've taken down the plate and call the cop. This is cool thinking and you are doing all the right things. Simply put, these little punks aren't worth it. I hope the police will bring you justice.

No doubt by "too slow" you mean faster than the speed limit but slower than you want to drive.

I think the sad part of all of this is that the victim really does not have any real legal recourse. Glad that you were not hurt. For all those psoters that think he should have hunted the kid down, well, thats just a plain bad idea unless you really plan to shoot him. I can almost guarentee that the kid has less respect for your life or even his own than you do. More then likely the car was a stolen or he was high and willing to do almost anything to not get caught. I think you did the best you could under the circumstances. Call the insurance agency to get the car fixed and then walk away before the whole thing eats you alive. |

When a slow suv tailgate me or in your case drive slow and then fast to try and bump you (you said you saw him did this to two other cars?), I would of full throttle away from those type of bastards and be on my way when I'm at least 1/4 mile distance. I don't recommend this if you're on a crowded highway, but if you are on a crowded road that kid is f*king nutz for doing it so I would just call the copz.

Well, sad to say that the Popo followed up on this by contacting the future inmate and asking him (or his parents, to whome the car was registered) if they had been doing any vehicular assault at said time of said day. Amazingly, they said 'no ossifer, I was at bible study' or something like that. That's that. Here I am at 31 with NOT A SINGLE BLEMISH ON MY LICENSEE SINCE AGE 17 (even after 5+ years in an 01 M), and my word + picture of turd's car + torn up roadside damage, and his word trumps mine. As if I just pick on random mouth breathers driving mom's SUV for shits & giggles. Part 2: No damage to bumper (the power of plastic), no leverage with the my insurance company as far as tracking him down.
Before anyone chimes in with "you should track him down by palte # and _____ his car, then ___ his mom, then____ his dog"... not going to happen. As whith the time that kids smashed my window on a sunny Sunday afternoon, on the street, because they saw an iPod adapter (neighbor even took a pic of the JD's in action), the cops did bare minimum (paperwork, and amusement with my naïveté) . I understand, in a way, but anyone doing this type of s*&t for fun at highway speed is going to murder someone in the near future, unless some fear of authority is instilled quick fast. An ounce of prevention, and all that... This whole incident probably increased his a$$hole cred and further motivated him to do cool stuff like scaring people on the highway. I'm still glad I didn't split his vacuous head open a w/ blunt object, as I'd be the only one in jail, but this was so baltantly wrong that I thought I'd at least put a scare on him via police investigation. Guess not. Good luck out there . Last edited by edgarj; 03-01-2007 at 04:37 AM.. |
