No love for the diesels? How about the N57X? 380hp and better mileage than a N20.
That fact that it has not been offered in a sporty / lightweight chassis with rear wheel drive is hardly the engines fault... |

My vote goes to the die-hard M30. My father still has his M30B34 powered E28, and that engine works like the very first day we received it. 360,000 Kms, not a single major problem. Lots of smooth power (for it's time), amazing reliability and a fairly simple design. The M variants are as great as the M30 is, but they don't have the simplicity of the M30. And the worst? Hands down the M70. |

With all the hightech stuffed in that engine, i have doubt it will be reliable engine. But i could be wrong though, i said the same for the M57 (286hp version) and they seem to be holding quite well. BMW diesels, specially the iron block'd ones are pretty stout.

Had one in my 04 ZHP and loved it. 86k great miles before an idiot rear ended me an totaled the car I swear the latter miles were even better than the earlier ones. Motor seemed to get better as the miles added on.

hate to split hairs, but there was no P85...only P84 or P84/5. P85 was developed but never put into use due to engine reg changes for the 2005 season.
I like that someone else out there thinks like me though; I voted for P83 a couple of posts up http://www.f1network.net/main/s107/st66401.htm |

Kyle, there was a P85, it was just never raced. According to the BMW F1 paper, the official designation was P85/5 or 84/5, BMW uses both terms in their paper (but you are right, it was a P84 that was modified for longevity). You're right about the P83 being pretty awesome though.
The P85 was going to be direct injection (way ahead of its time) until the regs limited the fuel system to 100 bar. The cylinder spacing on the P85 was only 4mm of thickness between bores! The M12 turbo was a great engine too; the M10 was amazing already in NA form and then throw a turbo on you had *bam*, over 1000hp in quali trim. I've heard the M12 could make north of 1300 but I don't know that anyone ever dyno'ed it like that.

It probably wouldn't have mattered though, as the FW27 chassis was pretty much a dud that year. I really, really, REALLY miss not having BMW in Formula 1. As for road car favorite BMW engine, I'd probably have to go with M20 or M30. Simple, effective, durable. |

Just digging up some BMW history folks.
BMW also produced jet engines, like this one, the 003, tested in the Me 262, the world's first operational jetfighter... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_003 Cheers Robin |
