Do you have a write-up for this ?

Was the wiring already present , or did you have to run wiring ?

The 12v socket I used was from a G20, but that was only because I couldn’t find the correct part. After much searching and diving deep into the parts list I was able to find what appears to be the correct 12v socket parts for the G42.

Found a website that not only shows all the related parts but also their part numbers.
The link is for the socket but it’s a good site. I live on the other side of the country from this dealer so I ended up ordering from a dealer that had cheaper shipping.

https://parts.bmwnorthwest.com/a/BMW...1_6217.html#06

First you have to pull out the entire side panel where you want to install the socket. It looks hard, but found a video about dismantling the trunk area of the G20. Process was the same. I couldn’t fully remove the panel since I didn’t want to deal with removing the emergency trunk release. But was able to move the panel enough to see and reach everything.

The install process was easier then I had expected. I marked a spot where I wanted to install the socket and drilled a hole in the middle. Started with a small bit and worked my way to the largest bit I had, 3/4”.
The panel appears to have a thin piece of plastic in the middle. I used a small wire cutter and box knife. Cut small amount and then check against the socket size.
If you order the socket that’s for the G42 you should just need to cut a round hole for it to fit into. The socket for the G20 has locking tabs which required me to slowly make the hole bigger until the socket fit very snug.

The wires I used were 20AWG sold copper wire. Which was probably an overkill, but it’s what I had. I cut the wires to about 18” long. This was longer then needed but no harm in a little extra. Attached the wires to the socket before I forced it into the panel. Feed the wires through and make sure they don’t touch anything. Don’t want to ground something out.

There is no wires already installed for the socket, you will have to run the wires.

Thought I took some pictures but I guess I only made a short video so if something went wrong I’d have an idea of what I did. I took some screenshots but they are not clear.

Behind the wheel arch there is a 10mm bolt that can be removed. I backed the bolt out a little and put the ground wire there and tighten it up. I marked in green where to attach the ground wire.

I kept the live wire to the side until everything was assembled. I fed the wire through the access hole for the fuse box to keep it out of the way during assembly.

After everything was assembled, I removed the fuse for the 12v socket. For early MY23 the fuse seems to still be there, don’t know if that’s for everyone. Put the wire in the fuse slot and Jammed/ firmly pushed the fuse back in place. Fuse F273 is for the 12v socket. If there isn’t a fuse there, you will not be able to use that slot. From what I can see, if a fuse isn’t installed there is no contact connector.

You can find your fuse panel layout here:
https://www.bmw.cc/en/topics/offers-.../fusecard.html

Hope that helps. 👍

Having the 12v plug in the trunk is great for a portable tire inflator . And also nice to have a small inverter plugged in to - able to have a laptop plugged in and changing . Or some other type of electronic device

They might have spilled some brake fluid when they filled and flushed - that stuff will ruin paint in a matter of seconds. If left on there for any length of time, it will definitely peel the paint like you see.

I would get the dealer to fix that under warranty.

Sorry, this may be a stupid question, but what is the small black square in the first photo? Thanks.

That’s where I connected the ground wire. The second picture is slightly clearer.

The square maybe a terminal block but I am not 100% sure about that so I didn’t attempt to use it.

I’ll see if I can get a better picture today when I wash the car.

I was being facetious. Since the title of the thread is "What did you do with your G42 today?" Obviously it was not you but BMW.
