This came in today. It's much more heavy duty than I was expecting, which is a good thing.

Note when installing there is a plastic piece at the rear which I removed. This will make it easier to install the brackets. You will understand this when you install it.

"really it's designed to protect from general smaller debris that could crack the plastic or cause it to flex too far. Ours is quite a bit stiffer and it would take a lot more force to cause it to move or deform, but driving up on a concrete parking block or massive stone would still cause some damage potentially" |

Did you ever get a conclusion regarding whether or not you need a new engine?

I think that's a stationary object, not a rock getting kicked up. If you hit a parking block, different story.

So say a car wheel is rolling across the freeway and you hit it, that would be a collision claim. If the truck in front of you drops a wheel out of the bed, it bounces and hits your fender while in the air, that is comprehensive. In OP's case, it must have been in the air when his vehicle collided with the object. If it was a big rock on the ground it would have damaged the whole underside

The dealership is waiting for the oil cooler to come in. It should arrive tomorrow, but not sure if they will be able to install it then or if it will have to wait until next week. |

Yes that's right. To be honest I'm not actually sure what happened, but I was on a gravel road and as anyone knows who has driven on one of those, rocks and gravel are constantly getting kicked up under the car, in the wheel wells etc. I don't recall running over any big rocks as I'm always trying to look out for things like that, but there must have been one that hit it just right to punch a whole in the cooler.

oldbmwtech, do you have any pictures of the skid plate installed? I'm trying to account for spacing between the mesh mounting hardware and the oil cooler. Is it a snug fit where the oil cooler is pushed up against the skid plate when installed, or is there a few cm of space?
I need around 0.1" for the screw head and around the same for the fender washer, so 1/4"-ish total. Or ideally I'd like the lock nut towards the oil cooler so 0.3-0.4" would be ideal. |

I didn't add washers toward the front for one I didn't need it and was a little worried that the screws wouldn't be long enough. That plate has some weight and thought the screws would come loose. When you install it you will see. Maybe you can figure out a better way to mount the front. I live in Houston and it is a bit hot right now to experiment.

Not much can be done with the front 4 points since there is nothing structural to mount to, these are simply tapping screws, (07-14-9-213-164), TS5x20 with 22mm washers, attached to U-clips. |
