Driving a manual becomes a part of the driving experience, not a thought process, not a distraction. It is like saying, I'd rather be pushed in a wheelchair around town than constantly being distracted thinking which foot is next, while walking. After 35 years of driving manuals, I am definitely not distracted by shifting to the next gear or have not thought about -- hmmm, what gear I am in or should shift to - comes naturally... |

A manual is more engaging for a car you want to enjoy on the street at sane speeds up to 9/10. If lap times are your #1 priority, or you just suck at driving manual, or you are just lazy, get the automatic. Or if it’s your only car and you need AWD for winter.
I’ll sum it up like this: Objectively, automatic is better Subjectively, manual is better |

BMW really nailed it in terms of value with this car. Starting MSRP less than 70k is mighty impressive considering how new cars are priced these days. Even in the BMW family the M440i is going to run around the same price, and no one should take one of those over the G87.

For those that [aspire to] wrench on their cars or DIY the maintenance tasks, drain’n’fill maintenance of a manual trans is far more straightforward. That’s another good consideration point for those in the position of maintaining their cars themselves.

You can have facts about the NUMBER of opinions. It’s called polling. Do you not understand? This can quantitatively be tested. For EXAMPLE, in a polling sample of 10,000 people (we use samples in scientific research due to practicality), 8,000 thought the m2 looked like ass, 1,000 were neutral while 1,000 were positive. If i were to run a statistical analysis, I guarantee you that the conclusion would be a majority of people think the new m2 looks like ass (even in an m2 thread lol). Now go back to science class and at least get a passing grade 🤦‍♂️ |

The fact that we are still bickering so much about the design after the better part of a year tells you that BMW did not hit a home run with the G87. Good design does NOT get reactions like this from car guys.
It's dumbfounding to witness the biggest G87 design fanboys ignore the overwhelming majority of the car community's opinion because some random guy at Kroger gave a thumbs up. It's just delusional. The G87, while a step in the right direction from the G82 "Bucktooth Mustang" M4, doesn't hold a candle to the F80, F87, or F90. I don't care how many thumbs up you get from people who just walked out of LASIK surgery. |

Cool stuff. The thing that stood out to me was the effectiveness of the brakes. Can anyone share a link/explanation about technical details of the brake-by-wire system?

“Finally an objective review of the G87” - G87 buyers What makes it objective exactly? The review acknowledging that G87 will have an advantage in performance metrics? Pretty sure everyone already knows that (even the reviewers who would openly pick an F87 over it). Seems to me like the only thing making this review so useful to people is because it gave a thumbs up on their purchase. Buy what you want and stop putting so much emphasis on reviews. It’s a great car and if you bought it, enjoy it. |

Comparing the proformance figures of this test to motor trends testing of the 2022 m240i, the new Nissan Z and the GR supra, the new M2 is king in every category. Out of curiosity, I compared to the test of my last car, 981 Cayman S. Still No comparison. I'm now #1 on the list at 2 different dealers. Hoping to get mine soon. Went with ZF 8sp auto because it works so well with this car.

From a technician’s point of view just remember when an Automatic fails or has a problem it’s very expensive once it’s out of warranty, as for the manual you can fix it yourself as well as replace the clutch I have always had a manual in my cars.

Yea… this has been an entertaining thread. Some hilarious comments regarding the looks of the G87. .
Regarding the transmission comments I get the attraction to a manual. I’ve had many, but man I love a DCT. Yea yea yea.. the new “cheaper” ZF is a fantastic and fast shifting auto. But I’ll give up some smoothness for the rawness, toughness, mechanical noises, and just hard core feel of a DCT. I wish BMW had not made the switch. |
