I don't know know what exactly they did, but now boot lid is falling down quicker and is harder (just a little) to open it.

My mechanic is on holidays right now, but I will ask him about detail when he'll come back.

Why would you post this without including the critical details needed to help others….

Because now you can go to dealer and tell them to check boot lid i ln stead of suspension.
I think that may help a lot.

It's not DIY instruction. It was fixed by dealer under warranty.

4,000 km of nerves and reflections.
I dismantled the upholstery, glued the plastic elements with adhesive tape, stretched the bolts visible to the eye...
From the latter, I removed the gas shock absorbers of the trunk lid. Without them, the same knocks.
And at the photo is my way of dealing with "rear suspension" rattling. I tried it only today and heard a fertile silence. The two plastic bolts on the trunk lid may need to be adjusted if the lock won't latch.

Fixing the sound for me was super easy. Once I removed the removable trunk floor the sound went away completely.

With the floor installed if you give it some good taps the sound it makes was what I always heard over bumps.

To fix it I’m just going to put some felt tape on the ridge that it sits on to give it a buffer.

Removable trunk floor? I couldn't see how to remove the trunk floor. Could you explain how you removed it?

Thanks.

BMW in all of their wisdom didn't put on pull tabs. just take a small flat head screwdriver and lift it up from the side.

I gave this a try, too. It made a significant difference! I wouldn't describe my result as "silence," but I would say about 75% of the noise is gone.

This suggests the the underlying cause is some play or looseness in the trunk lid hasp / closing mechanism. It would be interesting to learn if others tried this solution too.

Trunk bumper adjustment

So, it looks like we have 2 potential issues/solutions: 1) the carpeted floor plate bouncing around and 2) the trunk/boot lid latch.

For my part (and thanks for the suggestions), I first removed the carpet plate and the sound was completely the same--so that's probly not "my" noise.

Second, I turned "out" (by hand) the 2 rubber-bottomed trunk bumpers (in the lid) about a 1/2 turn......nothing. Then another 1/2 turn.....nothing. After about 1.5 full turns out, the noise seems to be much diminished. If I had to guess, it seems like the passenger side (on L-steer models) was more the culprit. My guess is that firms up the latch attachment (maybe). Perhaps the guy @ BMW charged with turning those things out was on a bender that day. Testing continues.....

Jmelaw,

I had the same results as you with those two solutions. Removal of the trunk floor and putting a rag over the latch did nothing to reduce the thumping.

I will try the rubber bumper adjustment next as you suggested.

It's not the carpet floor plate. I had this theory 6 months ago when I first bought the car. Added foam pads and it did not resolve the issue.

Old stuff, but from delivery of '84 533i I had a thump in rear that I thought was suspension. Then one day. had a passenger in rear seat and they wanted to know why rear parcel shelf made so much noise. Was a two layer metal setup with about 1/2" air space and turns out it vibrated at a frequency that was creating a thump like noise. Filled the space with spray foam, never heard the noise again.

Is this guy ever coming back from vacation? Knowing what they did would help a ton of people out.

Also despite being on vacation you could just go/call the dealer and ask to see your work order so you know how they fixed it. Take a pic and post it.

Angry Nope---NOT the trunk adjusters

Spoke too soon (re. turning out the bump stops in trunk lid)--maybe it was wishful thinking on my part, but the same frickin' rattle/noise is STILL there even after my adjustments.

Someone, anyone have an answer? HATE this damn sound.

Unrelated: anyone have a vibe in steering wheel (like the lane departure vibe, but much subdued) for about the first 10-15 mins of driving?

Bump stop adjustment didn’t help at all for me.

There seems to only be one person who has had this fixed in this thread and doesn’t respond at all

Guys, sorry for a delay.

It's not easy to get information about fixing method from BMW, but they told me that they modified boot locking mechanism to hold boot lid tigther after closing. And now boot lid is falling down quicker.

For sure they won't provide me any instructions. So you need to go to service.
