I worded it wrong. What I meant was if they were going down any one of those routes, I'd much rather it be Apple's implementation than Android. OEM is much better for overall integration. That said, though I rarely use it, the graphics in Apple Maps on Carplay is eons ahead of iDrive. And I can say things to Carplay like 'navigate to <friend's name>'s house' and I'm on my way. Instead of only being able to do that for known points of interest on iDrive.

Hard pass if it can’t be totally disabled/turned off/removed from car, which is highly unlikely. This is a disastrous decision by BMW. |

Nothing is more “walled off” than you can’t even install the next version of the OS, which is the Android world in a nutshell.

So X1 is getting iDrive 9 in 2 months? I ordered my new x1 a week ago. Will that mean mine will get it or I will be getting an “old” car already? Sadly I cant cancel the order…🧑‍🎄

I think many on this forum don't realize that apple is only popular in the United States. Android holds over 70% marketshare globally, the iphone and iMessage infatuation is a US thing. Exchange students often have trouble because they use WhatsApp instead of iMessage and the iMessage lock-in causes issues for communicating in groups.
So it's not that android automotive (Google) won't be able to be used by iphone users seamlessly, it's that apple has a history of making their integrations difficult if not impossible for non iphone users, in order to keep business via lock-in. What if you had to own an iphone to use certain features with your car... that's stupid and anti-consumer. https://www.thurrott.com/apple/24893...id%20handsets. So if BMW went with the apple car system they'd likely be causing an issue for a very large number of their customers. They'd also be restricted to what apple says they can do instead of developing their own platform. Versus the Google system will be compatible and customizable as it always has been.

FWIW, iDrive 9 is just using Android Automotive OS (AAOS) as a basis for the next-gen infotainment system. It’ll still use Here HD maps and other BMW-specific apps. It’s different than going full-on Google like Volvo and Ford are doing where Google Assistant and Google Maps are present.
Saw this on Twitter earlier:

Also looked up Faurecia-Aptoide, which is an independent App Store for Android Automotive OS.
Looks like Mercedes-Benz is also using them in 2023 onward with MB.OS, the replacement for MBUX which TheBingoBalls mentioned earlier in this thread. https://www.reuters.com/technology/f...le-2022-04-28/

So long as we can still use the standard CarPlay with it!
Also, the real reason x1 gets 9 and others 8.5 - rotary controller support! Bet your bottom dollar that they haven’t either done it / plan not to. As the x1 doesn’t have one, it can use it earlier |

BMW needs to do what Apple does and separate major OS updates from the hardware. At this point anyone with a new iDrive8 car or one in the pipeline is going to feel they’re already on a redundant platform.
