I think the misconception comes from reviewers getting new cars and going to town and of course, the parroting by other reviewers and for some reason, people on message boards. The manual is excellent.

I own 2 Porsches with manual transmissions. The experience is different for sure. A Porsche is setup differently in terms of the gearing being very long vs. the BMW M2 generally requiring more frequent shifts in the low gears. Philosophical difference IMHO. It does takes some getting used to the BMW after driving Porsches for 10+ years. I'm actually enjoying the BMW, although I do admit it is taking me a while to get the hang of it. The gearbox and shifting is nice, I struggle more with the clutch. There are a bunch of suggestions on these forums to consider if you want to improve that (clutch stops and what not). I decided to wait for a year before making any mods.

I don’t have issues with this since I’ve been driving it so long that I go through the motions completely zoned out. I can see some people getting annoyed with the break in / learning of a new cars manual. There’s enough you can do on the M2 to change the shifting dynamic to your liking so between that, giving it time to learn it, and not just saying it’s bad because you saw someone on YouTube say it was bad you should be able to enjoy it just like many others. |

My 2016 GT4 had a nice 6 speed manual. The only drawback is that the 3rd gear would blow and a bunch of the 2016's had to have the manual transmission replaced. Any given car at any given price point can have faults. I think Porsche makes excellent cars, but they are not perfect!!!

Still an incredibly nice feel that is hard to put into words.
I'm far from an expert, but I feel like I've been very fortunate to drive some of the most well respected manual transmissions. There's definitely something to be said about a nice clutch/shifter feel. T56 TR6060 V160 and the 6-speed manual in my wife's 981 Spyder (same as the 2016 GT4 noted above) When I test drove a G80, the clutch was more frustrating than the shifter feel, but everyone is different. It was honestly fine to drive, but certainly didn't feel as nice. It's the Internet, people will blow things out of proportion and also give excuses and push aside huge issues 🤷 |
