South end of Durham at I-40 & Fayetteville. Enough outside of downtown to be safe, and I feel I'm still in good reach of Chapel Hill / Raleigh / Dtown Durham, but far enough away that I don't have to deal with all the people. Seems to be a very nice part of town over here, seems like a newer area as well.

I know, I own two 1 bedroom condos in South Beach. Both of them are rented for over $3,000 right now, and I plan to increase the rent to $3,500 when the first leaser moves out in February 2014. I also own a two bedroom unit in Oakland near the Temescal neighborhood, and that one has been rented since 2010 for $2,300. Your best bet is the East Bay. Oakland, Alameda, Hayward, etc.

Roads are terrible. I cracked 2 sets of wheels in SF over the years.
Price of rent varies, if you live downtown, expect to shell out $2500 and up for a studio with parking. You could also live in an area like Sunset which is cheaper, but it takes like 20-25 minutes to get downtown. It's faster to live in Daly City / South San Francisco and commute. Cheaper too. Homeless people are a problem, and public transportation is really bad. Parking is difficult. Weather in SF is goddamn PERFECT. I can't stand weather in Los Angeles. Just remember to always bring a jacket and you are set. It's pretty much always 60-70s, so no need to guess or even look at forecast. Love the party scene, tons of food, plenty of things to do. This is the city you fall in love with. However, I will most likely be moving out within the next 5 years or so, to a surrounding area. Hillsborough, Millbrae, Burlingame... Somewhere there. |

That would actually make for an amazing deal, even better than her lease. A total outlay of $48K for a 2013 335is amortized over 10 years?! If anything, it's a solid inflationary hedge.
But of course, you probably didn't think that. Instead, it was just a failed attept at a snide comment. |

I didn't read through everyone's suggestions but if you are working in Menlo park I definitely would not live in San Francisco. Worst parking and traffic in the area, you might as well buy a fixie, grow a mustache, and get a pbr tattoo (all jokes obviously before any sf residents get offended).
Personally bud I would live in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, mountain view, Fremont, MAYBE San Jose. I would stay away from Oakland, Hayward, union city, San Leandro, and obviously San Francisco. Granted each one of the cities I listed have nicer areas to live, the areas I suggested though are easier to find and are more abundant |

I am curious as to why some people don't like San Jose (or put it last on their list). Of course the city I want to ultimately end up living in isnt San Jose, I'm not sure I see why some people think of San Jose as not being the place to live.

Not a fan of the demographic, weather, layout/geography, and location...you're farther away from everything. It has nice suburbs which are great, though.
