Well, I suppose it's a good thing I don't have to buy new cars

I meant to type 1M, but I think your point still stands just the same.

The more complex and more heavy cars get, the less I'm interested in them as tools for driving. They become just transportation from A to B. Honestly my M2 is already a step too far down that path. It's not really any fun unless you're sliding it around at 11/10ths at autox or track. Pretty boring on the street, where it's just a 2 series that rides a little rougher. Doesn't even sound different unless you have the windows down. Unlike the old M cars that felt special even just puttering around at 2/10ths.

It has made me ponder the question of the value prop of something like an M2 at all. I think I would have been better off just taking the money and buy a commuter plus a fun older car that is an event at any speed. Or just go back to an old 911 and use the wife's car the 4x a years I need more space. Oh well. Times change I guess

This isn't a weight problem, it's the performance paradox. You can't slide a Porsche around city streets either, too much grip.

High performance suspensions, modern tire formulations. There's a crowd that finds this too safe, too boring. Impossible to have fun with on public roads. It's a legitimate paradox.

This is why the FR-S/BRZ/Gx86 came with a loose rear and those absurd Prius tires. To have some of that low-grip fun. And there's value in that, it's just not the focus of BMW or Porsche.

I don't see any reason you couldn't put crappy narrow tires on an M2 to get that experience, if that's what you want? (Although an MX-5 or GR-86 is probably better bang for buck.)

Mandatory caveat: low grip is different from "shitty suspension that bites you." Different things, you can have low grip without being unsafe.

For laughs, 135/70-19 temporary spares on each corner would give an authentic 1950s BMW 507 sized tyre for low grip fun, while being very close to the stock tyre diameters. BMW even manufacture a 5x19 ET -2 wheel for the G05/6/7 that would fit.

Just being curious but are you a UK expat? I have seen you spell "tyre" on numerous occasion. Sems to be a UK thing.

I mean no disrespect.

You would be correct, more than half my life in Canada, but the Brit in me hasn’t been completely beaten out yet! Funny thing is my accent has subtly changed, so people who don’t know me often think I’m an Aussie.

This needs to be corrected surely.

tire = feel or cause to feel in need of rest or sleep OR lose interest in; become bored with.

I mean, if we are comparing used cars to new cars on price, why not a 911? Or more appropriately, an M4? Because they aren't the same in experience, is why.

If you ignore the age difference, the Mustang R Spec would be a reasonable side grade, you both gain and lose exactly the things you expect when comparing American Muscle to Euro Luxury. I can see the argument if I squint.

The Lexus tho, I have NO idea what he's saying. It's just not even remotely comparable to an M, the experience is totally different. I mean, the RS3 exists, so why even talk about Lexus.

Just weird to compare things like Jag to M2. And so on, and so on.

Also, the price deltas he quoted are kinda weird to me. Is the M2 getting a huge markup in Australia? The Supra and M2 are very close in price in the US. If the M2 is WAY marked up in Australia, then the argument makes a little more sense.

Also, lol, calling a 14 year GTR "practical?" Holy shit has he ever seen the repair costs for the GTR? For any 14 year old car, really, but especially a GTR.

You may BUY them for the same price, but you sure as hell won't pay the same amount in upkeep.

We putting genders into cars? That reminded me of a comment from AutoTopNL's video, they claimed 750i sounds masculine but M5 CS (any BMW with S63 in particular) sounds like MtF transgender like myself.

Gendering cars is common. Anyhow, time to move along and not make this about you.
