It was a challenge, but the 27 is a remarkable bird. All wee needed was 1500 feet of dirt.

Lots of great stuff was posted while I was gone, covering a wide range of subjects. Let's keep it up.

Here's something to get me back into the swing:

Thanks Denn!

I had two white-tailed kites hunting in the local park here on Saturday. It was a great show.

Not an optimal angle, but if I were to have shot the other side of the jeep, I'd be standing in water, and I wouldn't have cool reflections to play with.

P.S. this is the vehicle replacing the 1series. Current estimate of about 500hp to the engine. and lowered 1" with sway bar links.

sadly, also on winter wheels and tires.

* updated a few things in the picture, the car now looks more silver then grey like it did the first time around, and I managed to even things up a bit more. Still not 100% pleased. A flash would have helped.

* updated again, apparently it's been so long since I've really played with photograhy that I've forgotten all the things to make images look better

My first significant sale on Getty Images:

Looking down on the world... by dcstep, on Flickr

I only get 20%, but Leo Burnett Worldwide (creators of Tony the Tiger and the Pillbury Dough Boy, etc.) paid $300 for non-exclusive use of this image. The Wall Street Journal also bought another image. The amount paid is based on the intended usage and file size, determined by a complex scale.

Some other guys on Flickr that are doing similar subjects to me, say it takes about 3 to 4 years to build a somewhat reliable cash flow from stock sales through Getty, but I know 2 or 3 that are now receiving in the range from $200 to $600 per month off of around 80 images. I've got 38 images listed so far. They say that the agency sales are the bread and butter of this business. I'm still allowed to sell "products", such as prints and books.

Anyway, it took me a year to get my first significant sale. Hopefully it won't be so long until the next and it'll keep building.

Dave

Thanks.

At this rate, about 2020.

However, my hope to start treating equipment purchases as deductible business expenses in now realistic. That could happen this year. Having Obama pay for 35% of a $13,000 600mm lens is very tempting. I'm really "needing" a 1DX a lot more now...

Wait, wait, I thought he was only giving away cell phones.

Kudos on the sale. Hopefully it leads to more.

congrats dcstep, the clarity in that shot is pretty damn awesome.

I've been asked to put up about a dozen or so higher rez versions of my images for Getty on Flickr but just don't have the motivation. I have 2 little boys and just moved in a new home, bought a new car so much of my time and energy goes there . Must be pretty damn cool to get 300 bucks for an image!

Here's mine for the day:

Congrats and a great shot, well deserving.
Wish you all the best with more and bigger sales.

I went through the process and got approved as a contributor on iStockPhoto but only ever uploaded one image after my 3 "approval process" images (which has never had a sale) about 5 years ago.

I am a software guy and never wanted to make money from photography but I keep playing with the idea of creating a software-as-a-service web gallery that photographers could pay some small monthly amount and get a variety of themes, their own domain, and printing, digital sales, and other income capabilities right on the site and it would use the Flickr API (at first, eventually other sites too) to pull photos so you wouldn't need to double post into your gallery. Haven't put the feelers out to see if this is something anyone would pay for, though, and have been swamped enough with my other projects not to get to this yet

Awesome details, everything in focus beautiuflly. Loving the color contrast. This image makes me think of the "Physical Graffiti" album cover from Led Zeppelin.

COOL! Just discovered an illusion with this image. Scroll back and forth with your mousewheel and it looks like the image is scaling in size. At first I thought for sure I was zooming in and out browser magnification but instead it's the image that is creating the optical illusion of scaling.
