I am always surprised at the "he bought it for me by taking out a huge loan and it's just great" or the "I am going to buy an M3 before we get married as once we do it will never fly or make any sense".
I bought it with my own money, same as I do anything I purchase personally. Our finances are set up partially separate so no bitching about buying guns or race car with my dough and she can buy what she wants with hers. Defeats the purpose to buy her a gift with her own money don't you think?

Some people buy a "real one" and a matching fake one. No one wants to lose an $50k (or more) stone on a ring. Seems kind of funny though. Need to own it, but it sits in a safe. Heh. This is probably for ballers - like BayMoWe335 - you know, those wouldn't dare compare themselves with meaningless comparisons like "averages".

This. I was just going to say that most people don't wear their engagement ring often. They basically wear it until their wedding, maybe a little while after that, and it goes into a safe or a drawer for safe keeping.

Although when you think about it, it's similar case with high end cars. Ferrari and Lambo owners don't drive their cars every day, only once in a while. The lady friend has some nice purses and she's kind of scared using it everyday taking public transportation. So it sits in the closet 99% of the time.

Just like all the "kids" threads, I read every page of these threads, too, and instantly know I've made the right decisions in life.

Yeah my wife wears it 99% of the time when she can.

I actually forget to wear mine. She notices but don't say anything. It's mostly b/c I'm always doing the dishes and cleaning, the ring get damaged and nasty with all the water and cleaning liquids on my hands, so I have a habit of taking it off the moment I get into the house. Sometimes, in a rush to get the kid out of the door in the morning, the ring is the last thing on my mind to grab.

Plus what single woman would hit on a guy with no ring but a kid slinged on his chest? No one so far! Kid gets more attention from hotties than me.

Look, I'm not hating on you, but this doesn't make a lot of sense. Just get a cubic zirconia if you want people to think it's awesome.

There is a reason you can get a 2 carat diamond for $10,000 or a 1 carat diamond for $10,000. If they are both $10,000, it means they cost the poor old bloke the same amount. Anyone who knows diamonds know that their call center co-worker with the "big rock" got a shit diamond, regardless of size.

Again, a flawless ideal cut D color 1 carat is about $100,000. To me, that's a much more impressive diamond than a 5 carat yellowish diamond full of inclusions even if you "can't tell."
First of all if you want to justifying paying up for clarity, then that's your choice. No one is fucking buying costume jewelry here, so you're point is absurdly extreme. I'm talking about when you go to Tiffany's and you ultimately are down to two choice, one has better color or size but less clarity, and one has smaller size and downgraded color but better clarity, I would choose the bigger whiter diamond over clarity every single time.

My point is still valid. When other people oogle your wife's ring, they ain't putting the magnifier on to check for clarity here. They see the cut, size and maybe just maybe they can discern the better color. The cut, size and color makes that shit shine, not microscopic specs in the diamond.

+1, wife wears hers all the time unless hiking or something. I only wear mine when at work. Take off as soon as home.

Interesting. My mom doesn't wear hers. Neither do my aunts and my friends. They have a nice wedding band that they wear daily but not the engagement ring itself.

If you can pay for it completely out of your money and it doesn't affect her financially then I agree completely. I would also say you can afford it and you should buy what you want.

If I came home on my birthday and there was a 911 sitting in the driveway I would know that I was partially paying for my birthday present.

Just heard of a guy whose fiance demanded a ring that was at least six figures. They are both doctors, but still. Prelude of things to come...

BayMoWe335 - Didn't say cut wasn't important, just that every woman has a preferred style. Marque, Princess, Round, etc...

Agree - not all Princess cut's are the same.

The cut can make/break a lesser quality diamond to the naked eye.

My wife and many of her friends had their engagement rings soldered to the wedding band to make it one ring. She wears it every day, so does every other girl I know around my age.

Also I am not a baller like these people spending $10k+ on a ring. We went together and she found a ring she liked, she never even saw the price. I spent around $2k, I would rather dump that other $8000 into my house or something more enjoyable. Now if you're making enough to drop $10k like its nothing then its non of my business.

And to the guys with gf's demanding you spend $XXXXXX on a ring, tell her to piss off and find a new gf

Quarter machine had a really nice gold silhouette with a ruby in the middle. Granted it took about 30 quarters until the rotate thingy grabbed it, but my God you should have seen the look on her face when she opened that Tiffany's box.

My wifes wedding band was WAYYY cheaper than the ring. I guess we are just not jewelry people, neither of us could ever justify the cost of a high end ring.

I agree with this, and also view a ring the same way. I'd rather put the money to use on something more practical, like retirement, house, vacation, anything else really.

To be honest, I don't even remember what I spent. I think it was about $10k-$12k...

My wife has thrown out the occasional "upgrade" discussion after she sees the fancy rocks around town. I tell her, I'm okay with upgrading, but she MUST sell the current ring to upgrade. I told her, the stored value in the ring does nothing for us. It can't earn dividends, it doesn't provide a roof over our head or a mode of transportation or pay for our kid's college. In fact, it's more of a liability than an asset if you're not careful with it.

First wife bought me a wedding ring with diamonds embedded in the top. I lost it surfing. When she went to buy another, I told her just a plain gold band. I RARELY take it off, working on cars, mixing cement/stucco, cleaning out the bird coup. About the only time it comes off is when I do back because that pulls the skin off.

When the second wife asked, I told her the same: plain gold band, just think enough so it doesn't bend when I weekend-warrior in the back yard. Sized correctly, and this one hasn't been lost in "14 wonderful years"
