I said it in the other Supra thread, but the price is smack dab in the middle of where you have higher performing cars. Obviously this will appeal to all the people who have been pining for a or any Supra to return but after they buy cars, there won’t be a high volume of sales. I think they would have been better served by putting some higher output motor into the 86 which is what everyone has asked for but never produced outside aftermarket. It’s a shame that Toyota could have put their twist onto the car it decided to leave it purely BMW with exception of of badges.
I think I would rather have the Z4 despite preferring a coupe in this case. But for the money think about it, you could have a Stingray, ZL1, M2, GLA45, etc. if you’re willing to buy a 1-2 year old CPO car, you could get a Cayman. |

Looks like the interior bits borrowed are a generation older. The climate control and ZF8 shifter are from an F-chassis BMW, and it's only using iDrive 6 rather than 7 as per the Z4. Also at least in the UK it's more expensive!
Will be interesting to see what its like to drive anyway, should be fun! |

Why, because they own a 30 year old car that is way overrated?
I have no idea if this car is going to be good, but the Supra was not that great and the 2JZ is also way overrated. There is no room in the automotive industry to produce a "legend" like that anyway. They have optimized every bit of the process, so engineers can't sneak in goodies. |

I will say I like the car for what it is... it's effectively a compact Z4 and a light one at that.
The mistake here is giving it the Supra badge... at this point and time; a Supra should be a GTR class car... this is almost like a more powerful FRS. This is a BMW with a Toyota badge.... I am just not sure who Toyota's market for this car will be. |

I quite like this and the new Z. Pretty good deal for a quick “not BMW” BMW. I assume performance is somewhere around M2 levels just like the Z?

I think the biggest disappointment was the fact that fans were expecting a car to compete with the Nissan GT-R which is clearly not the case with the A90. I’m assuming Toyota wanted to compete more with the Porsche Cayman than anything else. So yeah.. basically a Z4 Coupe as of this point.
I’m not in the market for one so I don’t really care for the car. That being said, I kinda like the exterior and interior design of it.

You know, I only watched a quick clip of the interior, but I think the steering wheel is a BMW one with a Toyota logo instead

I think that as soon as it became known that it would be build by BMW, sharing the z4 platform (so pretty much from the beginning?) GTR like performance would be out of the question?

I can't get past the fact that it just looks like an FRS based kit car to me. It's narrow, short wheelbase, and tall. This is so different from the FT-1 concept it's like watching a burger king commercial and then getting the same food in real life. Deflated and lacking the appeal it should have had. Toyota really can't get away from that new Lexus styling and it's exhausting. If you would have told me this was a new LC model, I'd have believed it. Even telling me it was a redesigned FRS I'd believe that. Either of those over the 'mkv supra'

It'll be nice to see something different on the road.
Not a 2+2 though I think so appeal might be limited.

Over $55k, what's the competition? c7, rs3, gt350, m2c.
The 335hp seems mighty low but sub $50k though, the competition lightens up with the hot hatches, 370z nismo and not much else: Infiniti q60s $48k but 3,850 lbs and 300hp. The nismo Z comes in at 3,500 lbs but with 350hp so seems like it should give the Supra a run for it's money -- but something not mentioned here is 270 ft-lbs of torque versus the 365 ft-lbs made by the Supra. The Nismo gives up ride comfort and torque and weight so it seems like the Supra is the hands-down winner for those willing to shell out $50k versus the $45k nissan is asking. Golf R, Focus RS, WRX STI are all at $36k with power ranging 295-345 which is the same power level as the new Supra. And then there are some siblings with the m240i (which actually has the same engine but weighs in at 3,550lbs) and 340i (down to 320hp AND weight up at 3,650). The only other real competition I see are domestic pony cars the 1SS and Mustang GT which severely undercut the Supra on price being below $40k. They also beat it on power but are both around 500lbs heavier. The inline-four turbo variants of these cars are closer to the Supra in power and weight but the Supra is still lighter but a couple hundred pounds. Overall, and unsurprisingly, Toyota did their segment research and I hope they sell well so we can see a facelifted model around 2022/2024. I'm still perplexed at the 382hp z4m40i versus the detuned Supra.

It's basically mirroring the Z4, if that's the case it may not have a manual though this might anger the enthusiast cult following of the MKIV. They need to offer a drop top or removable top on this car. As far as price, it starts at the same price as a 4 cylinder z4 for the base 6 cylinder. The M340xi will be faster than this car and have a back seat and 4 doors, and an M2C can be had for around the same price (slightly more) with a DCT and S55 motor, and sub 4 0-60, though with a bolt on this could easily be faster though doesn't have all wheel drive.

Supra... Made by BMW...

It is MUCH worse than just the steering wheel... I guess BMW is building the Supra for Toyota. Seems that BMW doesn't think they could afford to build a Z4 all by themselves. Such a shame. Go check out Jason Cammisa over on Insta... Quote:

I get what you mean, but it’s funny to hear this and then remember that the GT-R came out in 2008. It’s too late for anything to be classified a GT-R killer, it’s about to die of old age. Speaks to how ahead of its time it was I suppose.

Close up angles look good. The second you take a step back, this thing looks horrible. I'm pretty disappointed, this car has been in concept for YEARS now and this is what is released

F80/F82 is the modern MK IV Supra. It's the end of its own era with the pinnacle of mechanical cars. Still has a manual trans, analog gauges, a German heart and soul.
This MK V Supra is lost. It's got no soul. It's a marketing exercise and trying to fill a hole in the Japanese performance offerings that just doesn't exist anymore. Aftermarket will embrace it just because, but there won't be 1000hp examples cruising around. Leh Keen won't be wheeling one around Road Atlanta. It's meh. |
