I'm 47 and went from fulltime (50+ hours) to 32 hours (max hours I can work); taking a 20% salary and PTO cut. I realized my happiness, sanity, and personnel time was worth more that the money and 80% salary was still plenty. It also freed up a lot of time for me to be more present for my wife and kids.

I plan to partially retire and move to 20 hours in 3 or so years. When I do, I plan to be a volleyball mechanics coach/consultant to help club vb players with improving the basics like spiking, blocking, setting, serving, and jumping to get to that higher level. Club coaches don't seem to have the time to fix the more obvious issues in players on a one on one basis. That's where I could come in.

yeah , but there's a time for this. When you're young you better prove yourself, and doing 50+ h/week might be a way to achieve your goal.

Then, youll have the background, and salary to take a 32h/week.

Many people are doing executive level job, then going slow after.

I'm aiming for that, engineering consultant and being on a higher level in the organization, then taking a cut and doing small employee work, like work site supervision, and nothing else

Walmart loss prevention. But only if I could carry a heater. Their cameras catch a lot of bad guys and not just from pilfering Walmart

We have a few people like that now...damn part timers lol. They like to stir the pot a bit and then step back too...much fun.

This. As often as I get new cars, almost one per year and a half, I have a weird addiction to shopping for cars and working the numbers. I love hunting for that deal. I think an independent car broker would be fun in retirement. Of course I hopefully will retire comfortably with my pension and investments etc, and this would be a good way to keep my mind sharp AND earn some extra cash. I wouldn't mind brokering deals for low end cars either though. Helping people find the right deal on a Civic is just as rewarding as finding the right Ferrari for some rich folk.

Other things I'd like to do:

Work at Disneyland and drive that old car down main street picking people up.

Automotive Journalist - I've already written a few published articles in the past, but my main career took over and I haven't had time to write much anymore. It would be fun to go back and review cars and write automotive related content.

Automotive Photographer - my other side hobby.

Travel Blogger

Professor/teacher - I'd love to teach at the college level.

Pool Cleaner - for some reason I'd love to just drive around to my clients and clean their pools. There's something very satisfying about transforming a disgusting pool into a paradise.

Consultant - of course the most viable option. Why not take years of experience and make the most of it?

I know a few people have mentioned this.... but somehow it just doesn't appeal to me. It's like, I finally got to retire from what I've been doing for the better part of my life..... only to continue doing it. One of the biggest appeals of retirement to me is all the time I'd have to explore things I didn't get a chance to do due to time constraints.

Decades of fixing someone's IT problem has burned out the fun I used to have fixing such problems.

At least there's some semblance of structure there

My in-laws are just downright depressing. Their daily routine looks like this:

noon: wake up
Have brunch
Father in law watches movies/TV all day in bed
Mother in law cooks/cleans all day
5pm: Lunch
Father in law goes back to bed to watch more movies/TV
Mother in law spends countless hours on the phone over random family drama
10pm: Dinner
More TV watching/phone conversations
midnight: Father in law scavenges the pantry for junk food
~3am: Sleep

The only real break in the monotony comes when they're travelling to one of 4 locations around the country where their kids live. But when they get to those destinations this same pattern continues.

It's like my worst nightmare of a retirement. They're more or less just waiting to die.

I see nothing wrong with that. I'd substitute the card playing with something car and travel related, but other than that, I would be content with that type of retirement. We're all different.

I did generally the same routine as the father in law for three weeks of December last year. Absolutely loved it. Could i do it for the rest of my life is the thing i don't know…

I just get way too antsy and feel like I'm wasting my life if I do this for more than like 2 days. By the 3rd day I feel disgusted. There's too much to do and see in life for me to be ok with this type of schedule for an extended period of time.

That's a good point. However I do love my job, but maybe I'll be sick of it by then!
