If SW is not yet available then likely only limited testing was done with some basic SW factory tools.
Lots of different issues pop up during testing of final customer builds. And those issues are almost never caught by basic factory tests. But some of them could be caused by malfunctioned HW. Don't ask me how I know

I dont think this is a big deal. Actually, I feel like BMW is doing their best smart move that does not impact the customer greatly. We all know the chip shortage is an issue. So, BMW has found another source. Instead of removing a chip, they are sourcing a new one. Here they have promised to deliver vehicles without missing hardware and update it later. So, you live a couple of weeks without these two features while they get the software programmed.

On a personal note, if I have wireless bluetooth, I dont need Apple Carplay or Andriod. I think ID7 is much better. I just hook up with that and dont have to see that child interface of Carplay.

- S18A-22-03-552 Brings back Vehicle WiFi, with support for apps. Included in ISTA 4.35.18. This will be rolled out as a Remote software upgrade at the end of May
- Carplay/AA will be rolled out via online provisioning starting 19th May.

As others have said, it's either that or no car at all.

With some insight into semiconductor supply chains, I don't envy the car manufacturers.

Some semiconductors have lead times of 14-16 months. So if you order the parts now, you will get them in Jul-Sep 2023.

The auto industry's long product cycles don't help as most semiconductors used in cars are of an older type and most of the new semiconductor manufacturing capacity is added on newer types only.

Car companies that are able to do a disruptive design change and stop having 30+ (think I've heard over 100 in some cases) small computers and go for one bigger and then keep up with new chipsets at least once a year will have an easier times than those that are unable or unwilling to do so.
I.e. it will be easier for Tesla than for BMW, VW (incl Audi), Daimler/Merc, etc...
It's all about design strategy and software development capability. Unfortunately, the German car manufacturers are not that good at the software part...

It's smart of them and helpful as a consumer. You see exactly what's missing, no second guessing, and will show on the window sticker for easier use for the next buyer down the road. Who cares that they call it a package...it is a package, a package of deleted items.

Software is rolling out as in we can activate Android Auto/Car Play now? I'm going on a business trip on the 17th so would be useful to have it for that. Would I have to visit a dealership to get it activated?

I get the choice of music context but the audio quality is not true whatsoever as both CarPlay an Android Auto are limited to 48kHz and 16bit audio quality when wireless vs USB. When I get bored of that then AA with Amazon High Res comes into play but it cannot touch the SSD source whatsoever.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is back!
Before you can activate this in your car, you need the required software update in your car. Currently only your dealer can install this version. Starting May 28th it will be rolled out for remote installation.
