Must be. I have seen bottled water pushed by the waiter and have needed to ask for water (or straws) because some places stopped providing, but have never seen a surcharge for tap water in a restaurant.

Never seen that here, but in Spain pretty much every place would charge like $1-$2 for water and bread. Of course the wine and beer was are like $2-3 so no complaining in that case.

Also keep in mind that credit card companies, companies like Square and such want the ever-expanding tipping system in place and growing as they get a cut of that money.

And like many others in this thread, I am limiting my tipping to primarily only restaurant/bar workers now. In most instances, I'm no longer tipping someone that got me a basic coffee, put a scope of ice cream in a cone, etc. It is WAY out of hand now. And top of that, the workers are all getting paid substantially more now than they did prior to the pandemic. It makes no sense to me that a part-time worker at Chipotle, Burger King, Starbucks, grocery store, Target etc. are making $15+/hr starting.

Sitting down at a restaurant I will tip according to service.

Places like Cold Stone I'll toss change in the jar if I have it.

I will not tip for take-out as I don't know who is actually getting that money. The person who clicked a button on the register, or the person who actually made my food?

And before anyone says it, I worked fast food and pizza for many years in multiple places and we had tip jars, and I never once saw any of the money from those jars, so it's not always dispersed amongst the workers. It's usually whoever closes the til that takes it all, supervisors, or it goes right into the til for the business.

I have started watching receipts for any additional charges. I haven't had anything local pop up yet.

Just $15? I just saw a sign posting for Mccy D's for $20/hr AND a starting bonus.

Meanwhile my GF can't get anyone to work at her eye clinic. They have been short staffed ever since COVID started.

Um, no.

I admit, I was a little boggled by her entitlement and attitude.

The drive through car wash prompted me for a tip the other day. At the self service kiosk, right before I entered the automatic car wash..

i think tipping is only american culture? i have travelled to africa, asia, europe (haven't visit australia yet) and i have not seen tipping.

they do include service gratuity but it's reasonable and they do not force you down your throat like tipping in america

I will tip bartenders to retain their attention, but rarely go to bars anymore.

I almost never go to coffee shops, and don't tip there on the rare occasions I go, especially Starbucks. Starbucks hands me a cup of (bad) black coffee, a portion of which I need to pour out to add sugar and cream myself. Tipping at Starbucks is the equivalent of tipping at McDonalds or Burger King IMO.

For coffee, depends on if I'm a regular and the consistency of the service. The couple coffee shops I frequent have all started the ipad tip bullshit. With the revolving door of baristas it's been super inconsistent, so I started tipping after the fact in cash.

Bartenders I will tip regardless a buck or 2 but they're mostly accommodating if the drink is trash.

My top stupid spot was some place in Malibu, tip pad STARTED at 25% and a latte was like $13 all in. Fuck all that.

For a sit down restaurant I always do 20% minimum unless there is an issue with the service which has become more frequent.

Takeout I absolutely refuse to tip. Same with a slice joint - you're warming up a slice of pizza.

I was at Starbucks this morning and paid cash. The Barista asked if I wanted change.

Yup, I might tip at a local hipster coffee shop if I order something that requires some finesse. Starbucks doesn't make anything tip worthy.

It was 3 cents. My venti iced green tea peach lemonade was $5.27. I gave her $5.30

I told her to keep it...I was surprised they would ask vs. just giving me change

The only tip I have for Starbucks is to make better coffee.

Do you guys tip the barber? I really like the place I go to in NC. It's a very old school barber shop. My issue is they keep changing the price. They have changed it twice I think since I started going about 2 years ago. It use to be something like $16 or $17 maybe started at $16 and raised to $17. Anyways I would alway just give them a $20 since that's what I typically have on me and told them to keep the change. Anyways now they changed the price to $20... bro I ain't a stripper I don't carry around singles and I ain't tipping $20.

Forgot to mention it's cash only

Barber, barista, bartender - I all still tip heavily when warranted. Which is almost always.

Like everything else it is situation dependent I think. When I am "obligated" to tip and receive mediocre service like at a restaurant that automatically includes what they think you should tip in the bill, don't expect much more from me unless you go above and beyond.

I tip my barber quite generously, but he is a young guy with a growing family, does an excellent job and is very detailed and hard working.
