To each his own, but there’s SOOOO much more to cars, and our enjoyment of them, than numbers on paper. If it was all about numbers and numbers alone, many mid range EVs would take the cake in a head to head with any ICE BMW vehicle…and that’s just BS. I had more fun in my E30 and E46 than I ever did in my brothers GTR…but the GTR walked them all!
Feel/enjoyment is subjective, in addition to looks (and I won’t go down that road again, I promised!). Reality is, many folks like me who love the philosophy of “old school” M cars just won’t get on board with the direction BMW has headed / is heading…and that’s OK, there appealing to a different audixnece now and that’s clear as day. Am I happy about it, no. Does it really matter to me, no, as there’s plenty of E46 and E9Xs to be had in the second hand market! Most die hard F87 guys just don’t “get it,” and same is true for the G87 guys…it’s just a different enough thing to attract a different enough buyer, and it is what it is. Anyways, cool to see they kept RWD in my honest opinion, and the power numbers in a car that size are legit impressive. I also hope they keep it super limited run and make it as special as the 600 F87s that the US got, I could see the corporate guys being tempted to start increasing production numbers and diluting the CS brand for profit…but hopefully not. |

With the base G87 M2 at 7:38.706 on the 20.832m lap (7:33.906 on the 20,600m lap) and the Cayenne GT with 640bhp as the official SUV record holder at 7:38.925 on the 20.832m lap (7:33.950 on the 20,600m lap), I'd say there would be a problem if the CS was slower than the 2023 base M2.

since the current speculation is that there will be no M2 comp model, it begs the question: will the CS be the top dog G87 forever? could there be something else, or a 2nd LCI that matches the base to the CS? i find it hard to believe that this will be the swan song since production allegedly runs till 2029 but curious what the thinking here may be

You seems to have some inside info. When is the M2 getting hybrid power (what I’m assuming you are alluding to)?

i think he is alluding to the x drive version which seems likely? but unless it gets another power bump i don't think it will be "top dog" over the CS....

I’m not saying you don’t think the G87 is a huge improvement. That certainly your right to have personal preference on the car you drive. I’m saying in general, that is not the mass opinion. EVO is the gold standard for automotive journalism and they ranked the F87 CS above every other car tested in 2020. Sure, some journalists like the G87 better as well. I didn’t mean to make this into another F87 vs G87 thread. They are both great cars. The G87 is faster than the F87CS. My point was that 270lbs is a lot. I wanted analog gauges and a 6 spd and buttons rather than huge screens and it’s more than fast enough for my weekend road use. I get that I’m old school in that regard. Back on topic, cmon BMW, offer the G87CS in a manual and I’ll add a car to the stable. |

I own a '24 M2 in manual and if BMW keeps the car MT, RWD, and no hybrid for a few more years, I'd love to trade up to the last model year with those specs. |

If your talking about EVO reviews, the G87 wasn't out in 2020. If you want to point to 'gold standard' of journalists, Chris Harris who actually owned an F87 CS and wrote extensively and produced content about it, made it very clear in his G87 review that he thought the new car was better. However literally every journalist on the planet could love or hate the car, it really doesn't matter. I think the E92 M3 is the best M car ever made, most journalists would disagree with me (including Harris). My G87 is a manual, and it's much improved over the F87 manual I had previously. I also appreciate a more analog feel (there is nothing really analog about either the F87 or G87 IMO), hence why after my F87 I owned 2 GT4's. Those cars are on a different level in terms of emotion, feel, and connectivity over any F generation car. Doesn't make them 'better' cars, but if that really what you value I don't think the F87 does it any better than a G87. It just has more road noise which I suppose some people equate to 'raw'. It's also not as wide, so easier to place on backroad but it doesn't have anywhere near the front end of the G87. Ultimately though none of this stuff really matters at all as long as you enjoy driving the thing. |

I know the G87 wasn’t in the 2020 EVO COTY test that the F87CS won, and it didn’t make the cut for the 2023 EVO COTY test, although they said it was a “cracking all rounder”. I already agreed some prefer the G87, such as Mr. Harris. I spent a few months with a 997 GT3, and I agree the GT cars are more analog than any modern BMW. Definitely a thrill to drive hard. To me, it just wasn’t as much fun on public roads. Enjoy your M2, and I’ll enjoy mine. Cheers. |
