After all the cheap jabs, including mine, I have to acknowledge that the display on the dash is actually useful.

Cheap French hatchback had this dash.

https://images.app.goo.gl/jyS5S42WzzVUoXZ47

It's great to see BMW catching up 20 years later.

And we also have to keep in mind that this is geared for CES show, not for driving dynamics. But, we must also sadly acknowledge that these days many hours are spent on finding more ways to flash ///M colors around the car that could be spent them on ///M dynamics under the car.
But if it sells more BMWs, so we can have the occasional driver's car, I'm OK with it.

This is all becoming a fashion rather than concentrating on the basics and ergonomics

Perhaps bmw engineers need to look up what that word means

Unfirtuanoty flashy gimmicky cooorfully lit up things appeals to a wider audience and this is what sells

Is this really better?

Examples of inappropriate tech could be
Gesture control - ass good as a button ?
Touchscreens - I feel totally inappropriate in a moving vehicle (I can concede perhaps when stationary there may be some benefits)

Rear view mirrors as screens. More expense and you have to refocus your eyes

The current HUD is an amazing piece of kit. Focused at 6 feet ahead

I think id5,6&7 are probably peak idrive
Easy to use and functional

I think bmw have gone down hill since

are you just regurgitating what you hear people saying online or have you actually checked out a new bmw?

I sat in the new x3, new 5 series, new m5 and listened to their high end stereos.

I have also owned many new ones and my friend trades them around every 3 months or so. So any of them I haven’t owned he has.

The new x3 was by far the worst offender, the quality inside was startling bad. Like legitimately one of the worst modern interiors I’ve ever seen. It was so bad I thought it had a lot of problems and sat in another one but it was exactly the same.

As for the stereos, they some how downgraded the x3 HK system over the last gen which was already bad. The 5 series doesn’t have access to the new bw diamond system. And yet the i4 has a very good HK system.

Auto climate automatically turns on/off seat / steering wheel heat in my iDrive 8.0 car based on the temp setting and conditions. It's a combined ("Intelligent" climate control system.

Looks like iDrive 9 does similar.

This 52 year old approves and looks forward to the evolution. I would be in the market in 2026/2027 for an iX5 or iX7 assuming they get the other interiors right (ie - leather options, sound system, headliner) I would be a buyer.

That’s just the thing: the computer inside the car decides when to turn it on and off, not you. In ID7, I set the parameters and the car just responds.

A lot of the time, I don’t like the A/C to be running because the heater gives me a headache. But I love that my seats and steering wheel automatically turn on and off depending on whatever temperature threshold I set it to.

Which is why I thought the climate control rules in ID7 were perfect. And they just had to tinker with it and make it worse. For no reason.

Also as far as I’m aware, there is no condition in which the steering wheel heater turns on under ID9

In the official image shown below, if I am seated in my regular driving position, I would have trouble reaching the main/middle display screen -- that is what made the iDrive knob so useful (vs touchscreen implementations)...

To reach the screen shown below, I would have to lean forward for my seat...

In my car, I can turn the Intelligent off and set everything the way I want it, including the temp for the blower. Apparently I can also say “hey BMW my ass is hot” and it will turn off the seat heater 🤣

It literally says in the documentation luisboston posted above that the heated steering is one of the components automatically controlled on the auto setting in ID9.

I stand corrected on that point. But I still like it in ID7 when I can have the heated seats and steering wheel turn on without the entire HVAC system also being forced to also be running.

My 2015 F31 lost its telematics in about 2021, when 3G was shut down. As the second owner, I had use of telematics for only a few years, then I didn’t.

That was a definite annoyance, but at least everything else about the car continued to work well.

What happens with a car like this, in such a scenario?

Also, how much can the software be updated in a car like this? One hopes that it is more updatable than all previous BMWs.
