I'm surprised no one has proposed fortifying a Costco. Sure you'd have to clear it out of zombies first... but you'd be set for years in terms of food/generators/booze/entertainment etc.
So in order of steps... 1) Have enough weapons stored to be able to make it to a Costco. 2) Maybe swing by a Walmart or something to pick up extra ammo 3) Clear out the Costco of zombies and fortify all entrances 4) Hang out indefinitely playing xbox, eating junk food, etc. Heck its even big enough you could support a decent amount of people and if you needed gas for the generators you could probably venture out to siphon gas from the cars in the parking lot. Or you could probably find stuff to make biodiesel or ferment stuff into straight ethanol. |

Costco is a great idea. A lot of them have skylights, vertical walls with no windows, and big drop down steel doors over all entrances. You'd probably have to rope up the wall and drop down a skylight to get inside. Zombies are dumb so they wouldn't figure that out.
I'd make a little ewok village on one of the upper levels of the shelving so you could move around even if the zombies break in, and have a nice little patio on the roof with tarps set up for rainwater collection. Hopefully you could generate enough power to run one of the freezers, but most of the cold goods would have to be dumped over the side in a huge rotting mess. That might attract zombies. |

Hahaha. I've discussed the Costco scenario with a buddy of mine multiple times. The only real problem with that is the fact that so many people will have had the same idea. You wouldn't have to only clear it of zombies, but there would be a ton of un-infected, armed to the teath people there, and you'll all be fighting for the same resources. In fact, the employees would have probably thought of this and locked themselves inside. Good luck getting in. Super Walmart would be good too, especially because they have ammo there. However, you'll probably run into the same problem.
Plus, once the power grid goes down those warehouse stores will be dark as hell inside. And in Dawn of the Dead they were in a mall. WORST IDEA EVER. All those windows, entrances/exits. Impossible to defend and keep secure. |
