they give a pretty fair assessment. but they are also looking through the lens of a pure enthusiast. and its hard to beat a supra there. especially at that price. assuming msrp i'd take a manual supra and use the leftover money to get a civic sedan to daily. it would equal out to that spec M2 they had.

of course everyone has different needs. and you can box yourself into any car being 'the only one on the market that has x, y, and z'

True. It absolutely does depend. I'd rather not have my daily drives cause me to cry in boredom. I'd rather not have to garage an extra car.

I'd love to have one car that can do it all, because I can only take one car with me on long road trips, that are a combination of highway driving and fun twisties (and I'll need to bring luggage).

If you don't need a do-it-all car, there are better options, for sure.

You’d think an outfit like Top Gear would have an editor. Dude’s credibility went down the shitter especially after claiming it was one of his all time favorite cars. He probably hasn’t driven one since they came out.

The pricing on P cars in the UK is very different than in Canada. A GT4 is almost twice the price of a G87 and you can add many options. I get the point of comparing it to the best in class, but even the GTS is about 50-60% more expensive than a G87 here...

Only concerned with how things perform when driven at 7/10 and above.

It's been many years since I had a '12 135i DCT, and while it shifted well, I don't recall the experience being significantly better or more aggressive than even an M4C in S3, much less a CSL in S3.

I'm still in break-in on mine, so still a few weeks away from truly putting it through its paces. I've tried upshifts on hard acceleration, and your experience mirrors mine there. Aggressive downshifts, only a couple of times, no opinion yet.
Old comment, but M-DCT in F82 comp and F87 M2 is GALAXIES ahead in terms of response. You will notice immediate lag with CSL or any of the G8x ZF8s compared to M-DCT.

If both G87 and F87 M2C were in production right now, I would snatch F87 M2C DCT all day.

If however G87 came 100 lbs lighter, then I would snatch G87. Simple as that.

It's seeming like the G87 is a victim of its predecessor's success. We'd be falling down in the streets worshipping BMW right now if they'd just introduced this turbo'd inline-6 with a 6MT without it coming on the heels of the F87. Instead, the reaction seems to be "meh, I guess it's a pretty nice car."

I’m a very satisfied F87 M2 LCI owner. I’m also over the moon that the G87 exists. We could so easily be in a world where BMW altogether decided to stop making a powerful little sports coupe with manual transmission option. So, much as I Iove my F87, I think I see a lot to like with the G87 and am excited about it.

His conclusion on transmission choice is identical to what I came up with.

Love that confirmation bias.

This is super easy choice imo. If you’re going to be driving any car, including the M2, in stop and go traffic a lot i.e. major cities then an auto is always the better choice. If you want to be connected with the car and will drive it more spiritedly and don’t intend to sit in commute traffic daily, then get the manual. Again, just my opinion, but with this criteria is a pretty easy choice for me. Also, yes it's a long time keeper for me which is rare for my shiny object squirrel syndrome.

As someone with a slight knee issue on my left leg, I am also afraid of that "springy" clutch he mentioned. Its definitely not a deal breaker but I do intend to daily drive the car so spec'd mine with an Auto Transmission.

6MT is you plan on keeping the car for a long time as it it the end of an era. Also, if you value more direct control and interaction with the car.

8AT if you plan to offload the car in less than 5 years and/of if you drive in heavy traffic routinely for ease of use and comfort.

I plan to keep this car until they take my DL away before dragging me to a nursing home (I am 47 now). Then my sons will fight each other over it for entertainment.

Similar plan, except I plan on being buried in it.

Respectfully disagree on the MT v. AT issue.

My F87 had the MT. Neither the car or the 6 speed were much to write home about.

More importly:

The AT is faster.

The AT’s 8 gears give you a better chance of being in the proper gear coming out of a corner.

I loved the exhaust note from my M4CX as it railed through the 8 gears.

My M4CX was an incredible track car with the AT.

My G87 M2 will be an AT.

If the DCT had still been available, my M2 would have been automatic. Instead it will be manual (it's not a daily car).

You like what you like, and I don't have any beef with that. But "chance" implies luck, and being in the right gear isn't luck, it's skill. And that challenge is the whole point for MT enthusiasts, it's not about what is absolutely fastest.

There's nothing wrong with liking the challenge and engagement of rowing gears, nor is there anything wrong with NOT liking it. You do you. But it's not luck.

“Chance” was not meant to imply luck. 8 gears give you a better “opportunity” to be at the right RPM as you exit a corner.

Good for you on your challenge. I prefer to go fast.

Definitely a preference thing with no wrong answer.

For me I loved the speed and traction of my G42, but I missed the manual transmission. I know it will be slower off the line and my shifting will always be slower, but I missed the visceral experience of changing gears. For me that experience adds drama and engagement to every drive, even just getting groceries or going to the gym.

I am willing to sacrifice performance (and frankly AWD utility) for that and I recognize it is silly emotional decision. Some times the heart wants what the heart wants and to hell with your brain (or wallet).
