Go check out an i4. It's wonderful in that car and doesn't look out of place at all. Seems to me like the older crowd is apprehensive to change.

I for one would be disappointed if the car got the current gen G80 dash. I want the latest and greatest and this is it.

Except ... parts already exist for G42. M3 Touring expected to debut at Goodwood. No chance for this if not offered for that.

What's next? You sit in your new M2, put on your silly Oculus headset and pretend you're going for a drive?
Curious, how old are you?

I do love the screen. I've driven the iX and i4 a few dozen times now and I like the screen more so every time I do. This screen doesn't take away from any driving experience. An extra piece of plastic surround doesn't accomplish what you're seeking.

You're going to get a screen(s) in every car you buy now. Either buy in or stick with the classics.

Nowhere did I mention Porsche or analog dials. Hell, I love those interiors. Probably the best in the business.

Take a look at how Porsche and Mercedes do large screens above.

Yeah, I'm not bashing other brands. I love what Porsche does with their dash...modern and old school. Probably my favorite out there.

All I'm stating is that I also enjoy the new BMW curved screen.

This interior layout was sick back in my 2016 E class. They just made it worse by moving buttons into the screen lol. Nothing "cutting edge" about this.

I'm with the folks that think it looks cheap and tacked on. Looks way better integrated into the dash.

What a tease this is with all the 50 yr blocked special content. Glad I got a '22 G83 to enjoy a traditional recessed screen for 3 years instead of the upcoming cheap looking job of BMW putting a curved screen in as an afterthought and was too cheap to integrate the screen. I can't want for the iDrive 8 curved screen set up OS to crash and then the vehicles are useless.

I don't think it being touchscreen is all bad, so long as it's designed properly. I remember when people refused to get rid of their phones that had physical buttons, but now virtually every phone is a full touchscreen. Haptic feedback would be nice if they can pull it off. If history is any indication BMW will update how iDrive is integrated into the dash as well as its functionality, especially for LCI models.

If one is looking for a proper sports car, there are endless options out there to choose from that can better scratch that inch. As far as I see, this is just a souped-up 2 Series that can still be had in a manual - BMW's one and only saving grace..

I, for one, welcome the new iDrive 8 technology, where the display is now rich in color saturation and contrast and word on the street is it mimics Tesla's interface, where a lot of the APPs are native to the system, such as Spotify or HBO Max, which can operate independently without being tethered to a cell phone. Cool stuff..

Anti-change folks have been consistently wrong about the impact on the brand of BMW’s forward-thinking evolutionary moves, pretty much since the E36 M3.

Experiencing ID8 and the new screen setup firsthand in the i4 and iX, it’s too high quality an implementation to not be well-received. Excellent screen quality, excellent graphics, excellent frame rate.

My personal preference is for a functional setup that doesn’t distract like the typically gaudy and ornamental Mercedes-Benz designs; for me, ID8 is a clear upgrade over older systems.

I was NOT impressed with the ID8 in either the iX or i4. The new 7 series integration looks the best so far. Still have how the XM will look.

You're right. ID8 is still clunky. Too many steps to do simple tasks. It's still early in the process so I'm hoping they simplify things.

Poochie,

That's the plan, God willing and contingent on the MSRP not exceeding roughly 62k..

There is no way I'm paying a markup on a depreciating asset or if my car note plus insurance exceeds my monthly mortgage payment.. That's what they call "hood rich" in my neck of the woods..

If all the stars doesn't align in my favor, I'll wait it out until the market settles back down and I could possibly snag a discount to bring it back under 60k.

You could make the case that the car will be an appreciating asset or even a solid long term investment.

In this current market, that's very well possible but this is a fluke, due in part to the government shelling out a lot of free money to everyone, thus, causing a butterfly effect in the demand for automobiles, which just so happens to be in short supply.. Not to get too political..

Even BMW in early stages of the pandemic assumed that the automotive market would tank but it instead had an opposite effect:

BMWFS: My lease ending soon $6k discount-BMW discounted my residual & purchase price! https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1716072

I don't expect this current automotive situation to repeat itself anytime soon, so once the dust settles, used vehicles will continue to depreciate on a more reasonable level as it once typically did.

I hope he's right. I can remember when excessive voice feedback was all the rage. "Your door is ajar". New tech has gone too far and been dialed back many many tmes.

https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/05/05/b...r-big-screens/

Ever since Tesla slapped that massive screen onto the dash of a Model S, every other brand has been chasing bigger, brighter, higher-res screens to compete. It's a trend that's become increasingly obnoxious, though thankfully BMW i interior designer Matthias Junghanns says that the trend is soon coming to an end.

"Is it the big screen that counts? I'm personally convinced that these black glass surfaces in the car interiors are… we will leave that behind, sooner or later," he said during a recent roundtable webinar with fellow interior designers from Polestar and Pininfarina.
Junghanns went on to say that the intelligence of car systems will reach a point where they can provide all the tech, information, and functionality you need but with displays that only appear when needed.

Tesla's screen interface is fucking genius but the fact that text messages are so sucky is the only reason I'd complain

Touch screens for phones or tablets work because they require your undivided attention. Hence why they are banned when driving cars.

The BMW implementation looks pretty decent, way ahead of Tesla's disaster. But neither are very safe. Hence why they are usually sold in concert with loads of active driver aids to prevent accidents.

I love tech and app design & development, its what I do for a living. However I much prefer tactile buttons and physical knobs that you can use by feel and muscle memory in a car. None of my cars have active driver safety aids, but they all have great ergonomics.

Just my personal preference. Driving for me is all about the joy of the driving experience. I accept I am in a tiny minority.

That's just one abstract manufacturer's speculation, not based on facts. He doesn't speak for the entire automotive industry or consumer demand.

LCD screens are not going anywhere, if anything, they are expanding and becoming more complacent, as the hardware and processors are scaled down in overall cost, as the technology evolves.

Trust me, even refrigerators and washing machines now come with a LCD displays attached.. The demand is still high and that is weighted heavily in manufactures decision to continuing offering and expanding on them, thus, LCD screens on everything is just going to become a fact of life.
