Something else about expectations and pipe dreams. The screenshot below was leaked in Autumn 2010 (no photoshop). The last line reflects that BMW M had plans to release an E82 1M (still codenamed "M Pyrat" back then) for the US featuring the N54B30TO engine with a 332kW output (445 hp - 451 ps) (LL = Linker Lenkung = left hand drive) with start of production in March 2011 (as the "regular" 250kW 1M (335 hp - 340 ps)). As we all know, it never materialized but that unicorn Über 1M would have been quite the ride.

Now to think of it...there is no way that N54 can handle 332kW backed with a warranty

Timeline:
  • Dec 2022: G87 M2 start of production;
  • Spring 2023: first G87 M2 deliveries;
  • March 2025: G87 M2 end of production;
  • April 2025: G87 M2 LCI start of production (Life Cycle Impulse - facelift);
  • March 2029: G87 M2 LCI end of production.
Back in 2015, F87 M2 dealer presentation materials (internal marketing) showed so-called "M typical design icons". However, it appeared that the 2016 original/base M2 did not tick all those boxes (see for example "M powerdome", "M side mirrors" and "M specific driver's seat"). In 2018 the M2 Competition ticked almost all boxes (but still no "M powerdome"). In 2020 the M2 CS finally ticked all boxes (CFRP hood featuring an air vent) and added some extra goodies.

So let's see what boxes the G87 M2 will tick from the get-go (either as standard feature or as option).

I'm worried about weight and price. The M2C already tips the scales at 3600 lbs. M2 to M2C had a big price jump and this car leases poorly enough as is. Any more expensive and it may just be beyond what I'm willing to spend. There's always the CPO market I suppose...

Looking forward to see BMW's M2C launch strategy. Will it be launched initially like G80 or will it be brought in during LCI.

The M2 to M2C price was pretty insignificant considering what you were getting in return. While the car leases poorly, I think the M2C was a bargain at around $60k. There's literally nothing out there that raises my attention unless you're talking about muscle cars (which I'm not interested in). Even compared to the M240i, I think the M2C is a bargain.

I think it'll be great if they can keep the G87 inline with the F87 price wise. The M3 starts at $69.9k so I'm expecting under $65k starting.

Similar feelings about my Z4. Think I got tremendous performance value.

I expect it to start at 62-63 before destination. Who knows with inflation though. Also I expect more options this time pushing people's price with cf roof or whatever to base m3 price making people consider the m3 instead.

At this point it's just a guess as to the price and option structure. I have a feeling that it won't be a total bargain package like the M2C is/was.

It could of course be a boxy section of camo to hide the shape but if you look at the overall track width of the wheels in the arch, they would seem to be the correct width which is very promising!!

I agree based off MSRP the M2C is still reasonable. Lease payments however are generally right there with the M4, at least the F82. I'm curious to see numbers on the G82.

Current M2C is loaded at $63k. DCT, sunroof, etc. I could definitely see them raising the starting price to that. OG M2 started in upper $50s?

I think it was more like 51700 with no options and before destination charge.

The g87 just has to be base price reasonably less than a base m3, which will probably be 1-2k more than that by the time 2023 rolls around. They likely want it to have options that put the price close enough to an m3 that portion of m2 buyers go for m3 which will have "more" stuff and more power.

I want to agree, but did anyone actually measure the track width of the wheels on that particular car or are we just staring at numbers on a computer screen? I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying that car might not have all actual dimensions match future dimensions. Wheelbase for example should be right on, but track width is easy to change. Who knows exactly how that car is set up, it's a tester after all right?

You don't need eyes to see.

I may dig up your post again someday in the future, once the camo stickers are removed from the fenders. Deal ?

Looking at the latest camo car spotted, I can't see the new "idrive 8" long screen raised, seems like the traditional infotainment etc.

I haven't followed much in which models iDrive 8 will be present, i expect it in the i4 of course... but what about the upcoming series2 + upcoming M2?

Is there any information leaked about if they will bring the current Series 3, Series 4 infotainment or if it will be the long panel idrive 8 ?

It was talked about starting around post #60 in this thread. It sounds like it will have the new setup like the i4

Sure, go for it. Just to be clear though, I think the front and rear fenders roll to vertical very differently from each other, and it makes me wonder if the fronts are different on the test car than they will be in real life, AKA fake. They might be or might not, I lean towards it, but am not stuck on it, and don't actually give much of a shit. If my words implied I was entrenched in an opinion and ready to do battle, then I misspoke. If they don't change at all I'm quire sure I'll continue to think they don't match each other well.

And, I have a question. Let's call it unrelated. Take the VO 1M - the roll offs front & rear look pretty similar to me, like they belong to the same car. Now look at the camo car. They don't look very similar to me in any way. Would you share or not share the same opinion? If I understand it, you think the camo car has a nice match here front and rear, nothing seems off at all, and there's something to see in the VO 1M pictures to back that up? I'll attach a pic showing what I've been talking about here the whole time. Just genuinely curious if it doesn't catch your eye and make you wonder.

If this new M2 is more fun to drive than my 2017 M2 & BMW can somehow put the DCT in I think this would certainly be my new M car of choice.

The M3/M4 beaver grill has grown on me over time... but it's still a buzz killer despite the performance figures of the new platform.
