Mesh alone will have no rigidity for objects in the road, such as tire treads, a piece of wood, etc. It may only prevent stones from piercing the cooler.

And I agree it isn't right, but $400 for piece of mind is worth it

@MPR Looking forward to see the final fitting. I haven't had time to look at mine further, hopefully get it fitted in the next week or so. It is really unacceptable not to have a piece of plastic there from the factory.

I wanted to provide another update regarding my car situation. I wrote bmw na a letter about what happened to my oil cooler and asked that they reimburse me for my expenses, and as I expected, they denied my request. I also shared with them that this is a design flaw in the car and needs to be corrected before it happens to anyone else. Sadly, this also seemed to fall on deaf ears. In the end, I kind of feel like my letter was a waste of time, but I had to at least try.

Given the potential catastrophic failure that can come from a sudden loss of all your oil (I've had this happen in a fiat many years ago), this does seem strange from a design perspective but a predictable response from BMW. Would be interesting to hear there have been many incidents across models.

Coincidently, this popped up in my ig feed today, reminded me of this thread, maybe the same designers/engineers have been around for a while!

This is a horrible location for an oil cooler on a street car. A chunk of ice or driving the car on a gravel road could easily blow it out. This is going to bite BMW in the buttocks at some point.

Makes me wonder though: How easily can it be removed? My car is being built and I primarily ordered the option for the bigger brakes and tire/wheel package. Don't plan on tracking it so this is just something that I will never need but could be a major headache to have to think about all the time.

I had this same exact thing happen in a BMW loaner (rock>hole>bye bye engine). It was filed as a Comp claim but after the Adjuster went to the Dealer to evaluate the damage he changed it to Collision. It fucked my rate and lead to me leaving State Farm.

Sorry I didn't close the loop on this, but thankfully the engine was OK and didn't need to be replaced!

Can anyone confirm if the 2022 m240i has the little rubber strip in front of the ZTK package oil cooler? I had a few pieces replaced underneath my car and do not see the rubber guard.

I contacted Zunsport to inquire why they have not designed an oil cooler guard for the M240i yet. They were nice and said they would like to design one but would need a development car in the UK. So if anyone is in the UK I would hit up Peter and volunteer. Maybe get some goodies for your car for helping. peter.langston@zunsport.co.uk

The ZKT oil cooler is in a different location to other markets.

Totally unrelated to main topic but the collision vs comprehensive discussion reminded me of something that happened to me a few years ago. I was driving late at night and someone else hit a deer (I'm assuming at most minutes before I arrived). A car in front of me veered from right lane to left lane and slammed on their brakes. I had no where to go and drove over a deer at roughly 60 MPH in a 3 series. Insurance originally called it collision because the deer was laying in the road but when I was explaining details and the fact that there was a car in the other lane so I had no where to go they changed it to comprehensive. Not sure if I just got lucky or if adjusters have some leeway in how they report things.

I had bumper damage, a lot of plastic damage, and radiator damage. I lost power steering the second it happened so I knew there was damage. I pulled off the freeway and into a parking lot to leave the car. I saw fluid dripping under the car so left it there. Next morning going back to car I realized the 'fluid' wasn't from the car. It was deer blood.

Afterwards, the guy at the body shop said it was the grossest thing he has ever had to work on LOL.

Turner Motorsports g42 skid plate

FYI - I purchased the g42 skid plate from Turner. It did not fit. After much discussion with Turner, they advised that I drill holes to fit. I was able to have it successfully installed without issue. Just a buyer beware note. Turner did not have any other solutions. They did refund approximately 25% of the cost which I ended up paying the installer.

Thats really odd. I bought the plate from them as well and it bolted up with no issue. Maybe as a cost cutting technique they are using a more universally fitting plate and requiring the installer to drill holes to get it to bolt up.

I also wrecked my oil cooler.

My wife and I went out, as usual, she was advising me to find a better parking space to cut 10 feet off the walk to the door.

As I was sharing my opinion on her idea, I ever so lightly grazed a concrete parking pylon, just enough to cause a leak.

Drove home with no low oil warning, when I noticed oil on the driveway; initially I hoped I struck it rich like Jed Clampett.

No such luck, no bubblin crude, black gold, Texas tea, but my neighbors still advised me to move.

The SA quoted over $2k to perform the repair and said it would be some time to get the part.

Instead, I found an oil cooler at a dealer across the country and ordered the Turner Motorsport skid plate and am doing the install of both myself.

The skid plate is very heavy duty, there won't be a repeat of scrape damage, and I'm installing screen like MPR, only I'm using black material and black rivets.

If I could do it over again I would use different stainless mesh, another guy on the forums found some mesh that I’d like to install at some point.

Granted, the mesh I used works and still looks perfect, but it has sharp edges that Ive gotten a few cuts from while doing oil changes and not paying attention to where my hand was. Also, the mesh i used is just a bunch of stainless wires intertwined, they are not connected/ welded together, it is holding up fine but Id prefer welded/connected mesh.

I'm so sorry to hear your damaged your oil cooler too! Hopefully your engine is OK and the install of the new oil cooler isn't too hard.

Thanks. It wasn't a massive leak and didn't trigger a low oil warning. I discovered it when I saw the oil on the driveway, so the only issue is the damaged oil cooler.

The car is currently on race ramps in my garage, and I've taken some time to study the job.

Looks like the only challenge will be removing / replacing the bash guards over the side oil cooler brackets.

Mishimoto has a guide to replacing the G80 oil cooler with theirs and it looks like a nearly identical setup https://www.mishimoto.com/mwdownload...d/link/id/1517

Mishimoto drills out the bash block rivet and then replaces them with a bracket and M6 bolt, a rivnut would work just as well.
