I've been hearing this alot, which is odd to me, because the Supra has always looked (and was a model of) the celica (the FRS), so this is totally in line with the history of both cars.

Am I wrong to say this is just a 440i with different body panels?

Plus it's an auto, so who cares.

Yes, but that FT-1. Oh man. We all knew they wouldn't deliver it but whew that was a great looking concept.

The Supra and Celica separated in 1986 and had little to nothing to do with each other after that. The FRS (FT86) was supposed to be derived from the AE86. Totally different lines of cars entirely. The Celica and Supra were both longer and wider where the AE86 was narrow and short wheelbase

Yes. It is based around the new Z4, not the 4 Series. In fact, the 4 Series is one of only three current RWD BMW models (the others being the 2 Series and X6) that can claim no familial link to the Supra since it has not yet moved to the CLAR architecture.

Its a shame it doesnt look more like all the concepts, swear its 99% BMW, Toyota fans are not happy. The Z4 is going to be quicker probably even with the cabrio weight. But the Z4 is going to cost a ton more.

Only benefit of the partnership is potentially crazy mods the Supra community and vendors may produce for it.

Quite disappointed really
Much hype and I thought it would at least get the bumped up z4 b58 with 380 hp and come in around 3200 lbs
That would have been a worth while car @55$k
Hard pass

Will be interesting to see what its like to drive anyway, should be fun!

This is why I love this forum! Like minded people noticing the same things! I wonder why Toyota sprang for F parts/iDrive 6 for the interior, maybe BMW didn't want to share?

The 335hp seems mighty low but sub $50k though, the competition lightens up with the hot hatches, 370z nismo and not much else:

Infiniti q60s $48k but 3,850 lbs and 300hp. The nismo Z comes in at 3,500 lbs but with 350hp so seems like it should give the Supra a run for it's money -- but something not mentioned here is 270 ft-lbs of torque versus the 365 ft-lbs made by the Supra. The Nismo gives up ride comfort and torque and weight so it seems like the Supra is the hands-down winner for those willing to shell out $50k versus the $45k nissan is asking.

Golf R, Focus RS, WRX STI are all at $36k with power ranging 295-345 which is the same power level as the new Supra. And then there are some siblings with the m240i (which actually has the same engine but weighs in at 3,550lbs) and 340i (down to 320hp AND weight up at 3,650).

The only other real competition I see are domestic pony cars the 1SS and Mustang GT which severely undercut the Supra on price being below $40k. They also beat it on power but are both around 500lbs heavier. The inline-four turbo variants of these cars are closer to the Supra in power and weight but the Supra is still lighter but a couple hundred pounds. Overall, and unsurprisingly, Toyota did their segment research and I hope they sell well so we can see a facelifted model around 2022/2024.

I'm still perplexed at the 382hp z4m40i versus the detuned Supra.
You hit it right on the nail

Probably because BMW didn't want to share the latest and greatest since it developed the entire thing.

Lmao I think you mean the LFA, that's what should have been the Supra.

Okay? The mkv looks more like an FRS than either if those. What's your point?

Looks pretty close to the concept to me. I'm not being contrarian, I'm honestly surprised by people's response to this car. This is about as close to a concept car that a production car can come. If it looked like this it would be over priced and people would complain about the price.

This rendering was more the shape it should have been. Longer, wider, and shorter in height.

My point is that the Supra has basically always had a look similar to the lower level Toyota sports car, and this seems to keep that tradition going.

The only way the RC-F is going to beat the GTR, in any test that involves moving, is if the driver of the GTR is stuck at line because he's laughing so hard.

I don't think you're wrong at all. It is similar to the concept.

Some of my favourite design elements of the concept were left out though. The bulging GT style fenders swooping in on the headlights were muddied and shrunken. The F1 style nose was turned into a grille. That huge awesome front splitter is only there in spirit. The large functional air dams and aero in the body were reduced in size too much. And while it's a minor things I hate the new side mirrors all the manufacturers seem to be using. I get that the concept mirrors weren't realistic, but a smaller mirror not unlike the e36m3 mirror would have looked nice.

There are other issues I have with it. But those were my main takaways. Makes me wonder what the feedback they got on the design and body aero was and why they changed it.

I still think it's a nice looking car! Will look mean in black.
