I have had to install radiator/oil cooler protection on all my cars. Most recently, purchased a 2024 718 Cayman GTS 4.0. As others have stated, the front bumper ‘holes’ are wide open. (Maybe not as much as my G87 M2, but still.) I got the Zunsport protection before the car was delivered. Took 30 minutes and about 4 beers to install. I believe I paid $600 or so. Chump change for protection on such a beautiful built-to-order dream car. At least that’s what I think.

I do agree that it’s kinda lame Porsche only puts protective mesh on the GT cars. But getting a BTO GT P-Car right now is very difficult…and expensive 🤑

Happy Motoring!

Just like I spent $2,600 for ppf on various panels of the car, I spent a couple hundred $ on protective screens for my M2 & my wife's X3MC. Maybe all manufacturers should encase the vehicles in bubble wrap & we won't have to worry.

Fwiw - as others have pointed out, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Corvette, etc. all have large radiator or cooling openings. None that I am aware of come with protective screens. Chevy licensed the aftermarket screens that owners were installing (after stating they reduced cooling & would void the warranty), and now sells them as a dealer-installed option for $900. Maybe BMW will follow suit considering all the money they're leaving on the table by not profiting from the aftermarket screen business.
There’s a difference between “unfit to be driven” and “undriveable”.

There’s a difference between protecting cosmetics and protecting fragile key components that prevent imminent engine failure.

I’m assuming you know this and just get some weird enjoyment from being the forum troll. Or is it because someone hurt you and now you want to hurt others?

others are being way too nice here.

the perpetual victim playing is getting old. second strike to the radiator is on you and its not "corporate dickriding" to say that. your refusal to admit any ounce of culpability makes you extremely unsympathetic here.

i swear part of the reason new products suck so bad by and large now is because we need to remove all the sharp edges for litigious kiddie glove cases like you- research your purchases and protect them appropriately, stop expecting daddy BMW to present you a bubble wrapped product that caters to the lowest common denominator to not fuck up.

To your point, everybody has a right to be stupid. Every one of us.

However, after spending $3,700 in repairs (which called his attention to a problem), followed by failure to take immediate remedial/protective action, and then realizing similiar additional damage 2 months thereafter, this person has abused that privilege.

HAH I don’t see how anyone could possibly be so offended at me calling this design what it is… but it’s giving BMWNA shill vibes.

the inability to accept basic personal responsibility for your belongings and substituting that for some vague notion of corporate malfeasance is midwit behavior at best.

it speaks to the worst traits of modern americans: someone else needs to look out for my wellbeing and hand hold me absolute safety because i am unable to do so. if daddy BMW gave you cooling protection it'd cost $900+ at the dealer (see: chevy) vs the $300 it costs today.

don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Fortunately I’ve never been stupid. Seeing you all do it so often should make it obvious when it finally happens.

Anyone running the upgraded CSF coolers that come with the rock guards?

I might go this route instead since the added cooling would probably be beneficial where I live just didn't know how well the rock guards are.

The oil cooler with guard isn't too much more than the skid plate I was looking at so figured might as well.

The fact of the matter is many of us do our due diligence with a little research and make informed decisions. I read up on the M2 before I purchased it, found a thread titled $1600 radiator, or something to that effect, discussing taking a rock to the radiator. I then thought, hmm I drive a lot on debris-filled roads, maybe I should be proactive and install some protective screens.

I then read a thread about a totaled brand new M2 due to the oil cooler being punctured & thought again, hmm maybe I should be proactive and install a protective screen. Those of us with higher-level thinking abilities solve potential problems, and don't whine about how car manufacturers are screwing us.

This thread is fun

The open maw look of the G87 was a BMW design choice. We saw it and we bought it.

BMW has no culpability for road debris damage regardless of the design theme of the car. Sure, they "cheaped out" by not supplying guards, I think we can all agree on that. But that line of thinking leads one to think BMW should apply PPF in the factory too to prevent rock chips.

Add them or don't but complaining on the forum about BMW's design theme is pointless.

I mean that's literally half of the threads on this forum, you'd have us close up and shut the forums down? I think not sir. I think not.

Going to put a solid sheet of metal in front of the radiator to protect it.
