Personally I don't need more than 16gb, and I'm seriously considering buying the 16gb version of the new iPhone - nothing wrong with my current iPhone but for the price I can't see why not. I'd get a 8 more gigs, GPS, 3G, flush dock for head phones, and better battery life. As for the MS Office ability that will be part of the 2.0 push in July....the iPhone will also be able to open PP files now along with Apple iWorks program files. As for going into landscape mode for texting that's yet to be seen - but it's something a lot of people want, myself included. I think Steve Jobs would have mentioned that at the WWDC, but nothing mentioned at all.

Actually, Phiberglass is 100% dead on right. They announced that they will not longer do activations over the net. They will also no longer sell the phone over the net. You must go to an ATT (and I assume Apple) store to purchase and activate. The activation will require the phone to be taken out of the box and hooked to a cable that connects to the store computers.

You wont buy a new one now because you can't activate it at home? That sounds like a pretty weak reason as to not buy it all of a sudden. Unless you're one of the people who wants to unlock it.

Nope, didn't unlock my current one; just don't want to wait in line with a bunch of other people. I'll buy one, just not on launch like I did the first iPhone. Really it has to do with me hating crowds.

That's all I want. I understand that this will be new to some people and having the friendly people at Apple help is cool, I just don't need their help. Oh well, I'll wait a day or two and go grab one....or maybe I'll buy one and wait a day to activate it. I wish I could buy it off the website and have it shipped to my door.

I plan on buying one. But! I am hesitant about the whole in store activation. If I don't pick up the Iphone on launch date, I will not be able to get one for probably close to 5 months. Thats time, I simply can't wait for. I hope all goes well with my purchase and everyone else's. I don't know about you all, but as an ex-tech guru, I am willing to gladly hand Steve Jobs my $$

It is called iPhone 3G. The iPhone 2.0 refers to the new 2.0 firmware, which will be available both for first generation iPhones, and for iPhone 3G. So features such as application store, third party software, new calculator, bulk email delete, contact search ... will be available for both generation iPhones. The iPhone 3G hardware in addition features a 3G transceiver and a GPS receiver.
I have the first generation iPhone and I will be picking up the iPhone 3G.

Also read that with the new iPhone, service will cost $10 more a month and in the long run cost more than the older phone because of this ..

I'm picking up a new iPhone 3G when it comes out. I may wait a little while after the launch though. Since my 135i ate my RAZR I need to do something. I was going to do a BB until I found out that there is Microsoft Exchange compatibility. Can't wait, but I hope the address book will be downloadable to the car.

Ok, so I read this whole thread and there's some misinformation here.
First, there has been no official statement (that I've seen) that it will be in-store activation only. In fact, many people are stating that based on the official information that is available that they may very well let you activate at home after signing a contract in the store. If you don't activate within 30 days you'll be fined the $200 early termination fee. This is quite possible to help with the wait times in-store. Second, I have an 8GB model and can fit a single average length movie in 1GB. If you can't you're probably encoding it wrong. On my last trip I had 4 movies and all my music. (As a side note, I don't keep around every song I've ever heard. That's weird. Most people with 100GB of music haven't heard 50% of the songs in several years. For me, when I notice that, I retire a song to the archives.) Thirdly, the $10 increase has nothing to do with offsetting the $200 subsidy. AT&T typically charges $10 more a month for their 3G plans so it's completely reasonable and predictable that the new iPhone plan would be $10 more. They could have just as easily charged $10 more a month and still kept the price at $400. |
