Even worse, no electricity + weak backup generators = no cooling for nuclear reactors (i.e. meltdown city)

TOKYO—The Japanese government issued an official emergency at one of the country's nuclear plants Friday after a massive earthquake automatically shut down its reactors and caused problems with its cooling system, but said there are currently no reports of radiation leakage.

"There are no reports of leakage from any nuclear power plants at the moment and no signs of any leakage," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Friday. As a result of the state of emergency, the government will set up a special emergency task force to deal with the situation.

As a precaution, the government ordered nearly 2,000 people living within three kilometers, or nearly two miles, of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to evacuate Friday night.

Went to sleep at 3:45am (3:00am was scheduled Tsunami time.) Nothing happened. "Tsunami" did hit, but at most 2 feet high in some isolated areas. The water level rose slightly, but nothing violent or damaging. Everything is clear, but the Governor is waiting for daylight to give the official "all clear."

Screw daylight, I wanna go home!

I'm watching the coverage of it all now. This shit is crazy, looks like the end of the world there. I hope things can go back to normal as soon as possible there.

I hope that the japanese will be as efficient as possible in restoring order, I them to set an example on how to perform a recovery operation for the rest of the world actually.

...perhaps we can learn something from their response if god forbid we're put in a position to use that knowledge.

Glad to hear it was not much and you guys are doing OK in Hawaii, Mark.

Now, we are expecting Tsunami caused waves to hit Santa Monica/ Venice Area around 11:30 am today. It was nice knowing you guys

Actually, I am getting my car washed and detailed today. Hmmm....Am I too crazy or just trying to be realistic?

"From Natl. Weather Service in Los Angeles: Tsunami currents impacting Santa Cruz, Calif. with boat and dock damage."

p.s. what's up with the story that a CNN anchor was making a godzilla joke? I haven't seen any of it but people are flaming them for it.

For those of you who might have friends or family in Japan, Google has set up a dedicated website to help locate or search for missing ones:

http://japan.person-finder.appspot.com/?lang=en

Godspeed to those in Japan.

I saw first hand the devastation in India and the Maldives from the 2004 Jakarta tsunami, and this is bad. This will be tough for the Japanese to recover from. I hate saying this, but the news will get worse as the days go on. Prayers.

From the NWS: "Initial #tsunami wave hits: San Francisco (1.6') Monterey Harbor (2.4') Crescent City, CA (3.4'), Pt. Orford, OR (1.7')"

edit: still lol'ing at the people hanging out on the beach in CA in all the live feeds.
