C8 Chevy Corvette coupe production resumes May 26, convertible on July 20

Quote:
Thousands more 2020s to be built as 2021 changeover pushed back to November 2

Recent rumors surrounding the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette have wondered whether GM will build more units of the current model year when the Bowling Green Assembly Plant returns to work, or switch to the 2021 model year and leave 2020 as one of the rarest Corvette versions ever produced. The automaker put the rumors to bed by telling Autoblog it "will continue to build 2020 Corvette Stingrays when the plant resumes production."

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear opened the state for business on May 11, and GM pledged to reopen the BGAP on May 26. At that point, there will be a slow ramp-up to bring 2020 Corvette coupe production back to full speed. A post on Corvette Forum got the Internet's sleuthing machinery working overtime on the matter of the model year changeover and Corvette convertible production, Corvette Blogger getting the relevant numbers.

GM built close to 2,700 units of the 2020 Corvette hardtop before the plant closed down on March 20, far fewer than the year's allocation — a number that had already been cut by 20% due to last year's UAW strike and supplier issues. The automaker closed order books for the 2020 car in March, and order books for the 2021 coupe were supposed to open this month, with production for next year's model slated to commence September 1. Corvette Forum poster Corvette Ed and Corvette Blogger say the new date for the switchover is November 2. That gives Bowling Green five months to fulfill as many 2020 orders as possible before converting some buyers' orders to cars in the 2021 model year.

Corvette Ed said GM would begin building 2020MY convertibles on Tuesday, July 13. Corvette Blogger updated that info to say it got confirmation Corvette convertible production resumes one week later, on July 20.

Getting everything going will still be constrained by safety and supplier issues. The GM plant in Indiana that makes the Corvette chassis continued to operate through the coronavirus shutdown, but the Tonawanda Engine Plant in Buffalo, N.Y., that makes the 6.2-liter LT2 V8 only reopened three days ago. Mexico, where some Corvette components are produced, is being prodded by U.S. automakers to move its manufacturing restart date from June 1 to "right now."

GM got 2,700 cars completed in the six weeks from February 10 to March 20 on a light shift schedule. Five months of hardtop and three months of convertible production will get many thousands more cars made, but even so, the 2020 Corvette will be more exclusive than anyone intended or wanted.

No sure of the brand. But the Mesh style works surprisingly well.

While I believe that the car looks beautiful, I find it unfortunate that Chevrolet will service it right along with every other car and truck. It would be nice if they gave high-end cars special treatment, using mechanics who specialize only in these cars.

I thought corvettes that get serviced at the dealership have a specialized technician do it.

Not every Chevrolet dealership can work on Corvettes. And with the C8, current corvette dealers had to upgrade their equipment and pay to train their techs if they wanted to continue servicing them. Now that doesn’t mean you get a more pleasant customer oriented tech but at least you get facilities and people who are supposedly trained to work on C8s.

They do and the two dealers I deal(dealt) with go have Vette techs who get training above and beyond the regular mechanics pertaining to Corvette obviously. Never had a problem going to a dealer with my car.

I’ve taken my BMW to three different dealers since I’ve had it and see M3’s, M5’s.... on lifts next to or nearby to my lowly 1 series. Bet they have the new M8 and even the I8 there on occasion also. Do your dealers by you have their own special service area for their higher end cars?

No. I stated this because I remember some time ago there was a Porsche dealership, near where I used to live, which had a separate garage for the more modified 911s. Perhaps this is no longer being done, or was just unique to this dealership.

Finally saw one in person yesterday at the track. Black with yellow calipers. I thought it looked good but still not liking the rear much.

Saw one in action on the road today and everyone around us was fascinated with it. Like people rolling down the windows and pointing like it was this exotic Ferrari/Lambo. Was def a head turner and the exhaust sounded awesome when he let it rip.

Sadly was being driven by college age looking kids tho?

Regardless what has been said about specialized Corvette technical training for the mechanics (all good points), what is so exotic about the C8? IIRC, for now, it is using a Chevrolet small block with a transaxle bolted to the rear of the engine, which is not much different than the C5 - C7 design with the transaxle sitting between the rear wheels. Once the overhead cam V8 comes out, it's not like GM Techs haven't seen an overhead cam engine; GM has had plenty of overhead cam engines in the past and present. The suspension is a new design but nothing exotic, and they did drop the transverse fiber leaf spring design for a more conventional suspension, which is similar in design to other GM products; I'd say the transverse leaf spring design is actually more exotic. It has a software-controlled dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is not really exotic stuff these days and not for GM either.

The electrical system in new, which is probably where training is really necessary, but I doubt the system is much different than other current GM models, meaning the C7 Corvette was electrically a generation behind and is now "current" with other GM products and industry electrical system engineering SAE standards.

If you think about it, the GM vehicles that really are in need of specialized training to repair are the Volt and Bolt.

My thoughts at least.

Agreed. ALL cars have markings on the chassis of where the lift contact points are. The are indicated by a chevron/triangle. It is an SAE requirement to mark the chassis in such a way as to show where the lift arm pads are supposed to contact the chassis.

This is just improper training in general, and not specific to the C8. The lift in question is a Rotary and looks like an asymmetrical SPO-A10, which is the same lift I have. The lift comes with a training manual and a spotting plate for the floor. Cars less than 94 inches in wheelbase locate the front left wheel behind the spotting plate. Between 95" - 104", the wheel is spotted on the plate, and any thing above 105", the wheel is spotted in front of the plate.

Kind of related interesting info:

My friend just sold his new 2020 Stingray for almost $40k over MSRP. I was shocked...

Apparently the factory's aren't producing them currently? If your rich and you absolutely have to have one this summer... the price premiums are outrageous!

Factories are back online since May 26. They have stated they will build 20,181 2020 units, by adding shifts.

Also 2021 msrp is not getting a price bump like some expected.

If resellers want to make a quick buck, I would sell now.
