Correlation does not equal causation.

This is just terrible journalism. Where are the control figures, ie: the crime & murder figures for places that didn't supposedly "reduce" funding for the police?

"“Domestic violence is really one of the things that changed a lot for us last year,” says Sergeant Mercedes Fortune of the Phoenix Police Department. In Phoenix, homicides surged by 44 percent between 2019 and 2020. But the domestic violence homicide spike was even more stark, with the citywide domestic violence homicide rate jumping 139 percent from 2019 to 2020."

"+Homicides, aggravated assaults, and gun assaults rose significantly beginning in late May and June of 2020. Homicide rates increased by 42% during the summer and 34% in the fall over the summer and fall of 2019. There were 610 more homicides in the summer and fall of 2020 than during the same period in 2019. Aggravated assaults went up by 15% in the summer and 13% in the fall of 2020; gun assaults increased by 15% and 16%."

This was all before any 'defunding' happened. Anywhere.

"In Milwaukee, road rage murders are up too, Pajot says—a statistic that points more to short fuses than thin wallets."

"One big source of concern for Herrmann is new gun ownership. In 2020, gun purchases surged. What’s more, a lot of those gun purchases were by first-time gun owners—as many as 8.4 million purchases in 2020, according to one estimate, or 40 percent of new guns in a year of record sales.

“That’s like if everyone in New York City buys a gun” for the first time, Herrmann says. “It’s a pretty big number.”
Studies have shown a strong correlation between gun ownership rates and domestic homicide rates."

"With physical schools closed for the better part of 2020, there’s evidence that youth mischief, which usually wreaks havoc in the summer, was felt year-round."

Seems more "scholarship" is needed!

28 cities were used in the above study.

Tucker Carlson?? Is he being sued for lying about the election, pushing a conspiracy theory about the voting machine company with no evidence? Pirro too?

Small sidebar, I wanted to be a trash collector when I was younger. I thought it was so cool they could ride outside the truck on the back. No seatbelts. That career aspiration didn't last long lol.

This is a very good article on the covid crime wave from NPR. I don't think Tucker Carlson has read it yet.

Yes. Your head is tilted down, since most people look down at their phones instead of holding their phones up to their eyes.

I see people including cops blatantly looking at their phones while driving here in GA all the time. In 2018 I think, a new law was put in place that was supposed to decrease this habit called the "Hands-free Law". It hasn't done a damn thing as far as I can tell. In fact, people aren't even supposed to be handling their phone, let alone texting while in the car. I see it every single day.

I got lucky Wednesday. State Trooper looking straight at me. He had to have seen me, but he didn't turn on his lights.

Drives me batshit crazy! Put the phone down and drive. What the F is so important you have to text or read while driving. I see it every single day.

I wonder how they can prove what you're looking at. I could have been looking in my purse at my wallet or a business card at the red light and not my phone (even though I was reading a text on my Lock Screen)... I looked up and a state trooper was looking straight at me....though I never took my phone out of my purse, I did grab it and angle it to read the text at the stop light. He didn't pull me over. But talk about an oh shit moment lol

Why should I bother to have insurance if there is no legal penalty for not having it while I drive?

I got the CHP report. The same insurance information provided to me was provided to the officer. After reading the report, I asked the officer at the desk for some assistance: This insurance doesn't include auto liability" "It's a civil matter now" "But he lied to you and didn't provide a valid insurance policy" "If he had a number written on a piece of paper, that what I put in the report, we can't verify" "Well, I have verified, the policy isn't for vehicle liability, you aren't going to do any sort of enforcement?" "No, have a nice day"

So now, a known non-insured vehicle is still out there on the roads, capable of committing more damage with no finnacial liability.

Same reason there’s no consequences for not paying child support. It just screws the good people.

As Tim said, they probably can't prove you were looking at your phone. My belief, since I am not a cop, a lawyer, or a politician, is that the distracted driving charge (or the new hands-free laws) are add-on charges. You'll get pulled over for something else, but there will be an added charge of "distracted driving."

As a regular Joe driver, I don't care if you are looking at your phone, eating a taco, picking your nose, or half asleep, so long as you stay in your lane. Both literally and figuratively.

Sometimes, but I don't need to prove you were looking at it. By California law, I can write the cite if you have your phone in your hand. I'm not sure about the laws in other states.
