Pretty good story about an A-12/SR-71 test pilot rolling one inverted. Don’t see many pics like this one.

The DeHavilland Dash-7. RCAF CC-132.

Only two were purchased in 1979 for the European Theater. It had a short service life when Canada pulled-out of Germany. Both planes were sold and had many new owners: http://www.rwrwalker.ca/CF_CC132.html

It was a full STOL aircraft that could land on a dime. I believe that it is the only four engine turboprop to be allowed to land at the Alpine ski resort of Courchevel, France, one of the most dangerous runway in the World.

I think gradual transition time-building up the aircraft complexity/performance ladder is good thing.

I knew a local low-time pilot who jumped straight from a C-172 to a complex pressurized multi-engine C-337 and ended up dead. Sure, he got his multi-engine rating, but... still low time.

What's the rush. Build time, then move on/up.

A couple of Air Taxis flew the Dash-7 into LAX. We would slam them in a mile or so behind the guy they were following (vertically separated of course), have them hit the brakes and before we lost vertical, we had longitudinal separation. That was FUN!

I had a Cessna Skymaster try to land on top of me on a *closed* runway in the 1990's. (I was in an experimental solar-powered race car and not an airplane, using the spare/closed runway while it was having some work done on the pavement with NOTAMs published and flashing X's on both ends.) A few months after getting out of Uncle Sam's timeout corner for that one, he allegedly forgot to take his pitot tube cap off and (fatally) augured into a field beyond the end of the runway.....

What the hell are you going to use it for? How are you going to justify taking the risk flying it on low-level training missions? Or somewhere where it can take a birdstrike? Or run it around the pattern where you run the chance of a crash via pilot error.

No matter *how* good the simulators for this thing are, the crews (pilots, maintainers, etc.) will have to actually FLY it.

And other than full-on Global Nuclear War (and yeah, nuclear triad, subs, missiles, yada yada)-- what is it GOOD for?

If you use it for ANY conventional role, you have to ask yourself- what *possible* conventional target is worth risking a TWO BILLION (with a "B") asset?

I'm sort of boggled. I sure as hell wouldn't want to sign for the jet.

TWO. BILLION. DOLLARS. PER.

This is insane. The Military-Industrial complex at its VERY worst.

I hear yah, inflation hits everyone.

Kidding aside though I 100% agree. Air Force and Navy decisions have been terrible the last couple of decades in regards to big ticket items. They have these shiny new toys that are very mission limited and are so expensive they can only purchase a handful of them. Meanwhile in the Air Force’s case the backbone of their bomber and fighter fleets are decades old. Forcing them to upgrade ancient B-52s and restart production of a new version of the F-15. I think there was talk of doing that with the F-16 to. Supposedly the F-35 will help when production fully ramps up, but I guess we’ll see. The Air Force is trying to save and pour a bunch of money into the sixth gen fighter program. Also remains to be seen when that comes out if they can build more than just a token number of them like they did with the Raptors.

From the archives: Piasecki H-21 (Boeing Vertol) aka " The Flying Banana" from 442 Sqn based at RCAF Comox BC. In service from approx. 1952-1968.

Notable: The shooting down of a U.S. Army CH-21 (Shawnee) near the Laotian-Vietnamese border with the death of four aviators in July 1962 were some of the U.S. Army's earliest casualties in the Vietnam War.

You can thank Airbus for the loss of that livery.

Boeing Vertol CH-113 Labrador

This aircraft is a twin-engine, tandem-rotor search and rescue (SAR) helicopter used by the Canadian Forces from 1963 until 2004. It was a variant of the Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight designed and built in the United States.

You can easily identify the Labrador from the Chinook by the landing gear (3 vs 4) and the engines inlets/exhaust configuration.

The SAR role of the Labrador was relegated to the Agusta Westland CH-149 Cormorant.

Early livery and the updated color of all SAR aircrafts.
