Probably back to my WRX or STI the cars where just fun to drive and drive hard. I gave them up because I was driving like a ralley car racer everywhere I went.

Porsche. Would look hard at a used 997 or a newish Cayman GTS / Boxster Spyder.

If money were "less" of an issue I'd go Porsche for sure.
Since money is somewhat of an issue and track driving my street car has become much less of a priority I actually went to VW and now have a 2015 GTI. I couldn't justify paying the money for an M3 ($65K) or the "entry" price of a 328i ($48K spec'd the way I'd want it). I liked the driving dynamics of the GTI better than the 328 as well. I usually modify my cars as well and have put about $10K into my GTI. It now rides on coil-overs, wider/lighter wheels and tires along with an LSD and Stage 1 APR tune. So I'm around 330HP and 380TQ in a car that weighs a little less than 3,000lbs. Very nimble little car and a ton of fun. I still am part owner of an E86 Z4 3.0si coupe race car and my wife still has her X3, so I'm not departing from BMW at all. I race either a 335 or Spec E46 as well. Once we get the Z4 coupe sorted, I'll be racing that as well.

Something small, light and quick with great handling, a naturally aspirated engine, rear wheel drive, a manual transmission, extraordinary reliability and as little needless “technology for technology’s sake” as possible these days = Mazda MX-5.

I traded in my 2006 Z4 and 2006 X5 for a 2012 MB C300 Sport and a little cash. I got a new job working 2.5 miles from home, so there was no longer a need for 2 cars. My former commute was 55 miles each way, so the two vehicles cut down on the mileage piled on just one. Just needing one car gave me the opportunity to get something newer. At the time, my dealer didn't have any BMW in my price range that interested me, but he did have this C300 that I liked. So now I own it.
If I had it to do over again, I might have gone for a larger but older model, like an E350 or even an older S500 if one was available. But at the time, I was happy to get a low mileage, one year old car. I've had it 3 years now and only put 24k miles on it. I used to trade cars in when they hit 150k, but this one will be an antique by the time I run it that high. I do miss some things from my BMW days, like a heated steering wheel and rain sensing wipers that work. But for the most part the C300 has been a good car. No complaints.

Already did. 991 C2S and a GLE350 as a DD. Used to have 4 BMW's in the family driveway. All but one are gone now.
