first off, I have seen the G87 in person
I think anyone who calls it an ugly car is being a little dramatic and looking to stir things up
it's a good looking car, wide and aggressive
never an ugly car in any universe

I will say that for me it doesn't draw me in like the F87 always did, just doesn't have the same integrated subtle beauty

to me the G87 is to the F87 what the 370Z is to the 350Z
both good looking cars
but decades later it's clear which one is the classic beauty

but this is yet again just another opinion

and we should all be thankful that BMW made the G87 with a manual no less!

This is the single biggest flaw with the car and BMW royally fucked up in this regard. But this is not a design issue - it is an engineering and production issue.

Before anybody says that's intentional..take a look at the official design sketch. The joint of the hood and bumper is intended to be the continuation of the same uniform surface. COVID has hit auto production hard. And things like this end up being the outcome. Highly disappointing coming from a German brand, BMW nonetheless.

Also, designers tend to get the blame for ugly cars, but they are almost never to blame. The sheer level of technical and skill and competency needed to land a job at an OEM like BMW can't be overstated. Ugly cars and mistakes like this are usually due to bad internal politics, poor modelers, cost cutting, engineering and packaging+safety regulations or some combination thereof.

I’ve always liked the g87 design and I think you’re assessment is pretty accurate. The g87 design is more exaggerated than the f87, but instead of the softer curves it went boxy like the e30/e36. However the fake vents of the f87 are still fake on the g87 aren’t they? Atleast I’ll be able to keep my “chonky” plate when I move from my f87 to the g.

I disagree. The G87 provides performance/capabilities around that of a F87-CS at substantially lower prices. If you adjust for the interior quality and electronic sophistication it's even more impressive.

we would need to see some comparative lap times first.

The F87CS is still the better value. especially when you factor its price stability. 3 years later they are still selling at msrp or above. This wont happen with the current base G87. it will depreciate just like the current m3 and m4. especially once the comp and cs models arrive.

It's OK to say "I don't like it, it's not for me." You can stop there, it's OK! I know this the Internet, but really, all you have to say is that you don't like it. When you try to make up "facts" to prove beauty or lack of it, it's embarrassing.
Another lengthy argument, this time going all the way down the rabbit hole and to the Birth of Venus to justify the looks. I rest my case.

So when you buy any other car in black, it's because the buyer likes black. But if it's the G87, it's to hide the "ugliness". Lol ok.

I get this is a BMW enthusiast forum but I really like the 90s JDM car vibes this gives off with the practicality and being a beast performer.

The 'JDM'ness brought me in from looking at the Supra / CTR / RS3.
Those using gundam to trash this car seems like an odd choice, since to most people, gundam's are cool.

As a side not, it seems this car is living in a lot of people's heads rent free. If you don't have an F87 and don't like the G87, cool, great, go hang out in the F87 forum. If you have an F87 and prefer that over the G87, cool, great, go hang out at the F87 forum. Coming here just to trash the car, and rain on the parades people who ordered/bought the car, is just mean spirited, and gives more salty vibes than anything. If you have last gen's, then just go enjoy the car you have already. No need to be an asshole to those with a differing opinion on something that is subjective.

Couldn't agree more with these words, people argue they are here because it's on the front page of the forum but that's not true, they don't have to click on the article. I have no interest in the F87, never did - and haven't been to that part of the forum once nor click on an F87 article, why would you?

Not really a fair comparison considering the F87 CS’ price is bloated by carbon fibre and limited edition privileges. It’s £30k more than a comp in UK. Even so, it will retain its value much more effectively given its limited edition status and reputation. The G87 M2 will plummet in value as soon as the competition/CS/xDrive is launched.

You have to compare apples to apples - M2 Comp launched at under £50k. And, despite being ‘old’, still offers superior dual clutch transmission, substantially lower weight etc.

I’m not saying the G87 is a ‘bad’ car. It’s actually very good. But, for the price, I expected better. Then again, the car market is a joke at the moment.

Not knocking anyone who gets the G87. It’s a fantastic car. But as an F87 owner who genuinely had plans to upgrade to the G87, I’m disappointed. I hoped for better. I will openly criticise BMW’s choices, voice my opinion and vote with my wallet in hope BMW listen and give us fans what we want. That’s why I am holding out hope for the CS etc.

Obviously if someone is just spewing trash and being a **** then yes, they don’t belong here and should be told where to go, but that’s the job of the forum mods. Outside of that, I don’t agree with this mantra of ‘if you don’t like it, shut up’. That’s a tragic fanboy approach which ultimately leads to reduced competition and declining product quality because no poor choice is ever criticised.

i missed this article in the past but it makes sense in regard to g80 and 87 design language. the goal is controversy and getting people to talk according to BMW chairman oliver zipse. well, they've definitely achieved that.

bad publicity is still publicity i guess

Quote:
I want controversy. If we don’t have controversy [in the early design process], I already know it’s too easy. In the early design if you do not have controversy, that’s the mistake you make. Out of the controversy you get engagement. You get people thinking about it and thinking about alternatives.

We drove this morning through Palm Springs. And if you looked at all the other cars, they all look alike. They’re aerodynamically streamlined, there are not ugly cars any more. They’re not great, but they’re not ugly cars. They look very much alike. If you want to have modern, future-oriented design, you will automatically get controversy and of course we want that.

The only thing I absolutely hate is the pathetic rear lip spoiler

IND-Distribution needs to make some lovely vents for the ginormous rear reflectors and then the rear will look much better

And a nice rear spoiler replacement of course

This is somewhat comical. If you like the car, fine, good for you. There are several who don’t care for the design of the G87. I’ve read many of those thoughts on this forum, and would include myself in that camp. It’s a matter of taste. Clearly BMW wants to change those impressions, otherwise they wouldn’t have highlighted this post on the main page. It feels like a paid-for-advertisement. Also, if some of the short-comings have to be overcome on the next LCI, then doesn’t that reinforce many of the negative criticisms? Where I find the humor, is that some of these positive comments sound like testimonials for grief counseling, with people rationalizing and accepting their situation.

I have the opposite opinion and feel it is the F87 CS that has the most to loose when updated variants of the G87 series are available. I can’t see any sane person choosing the current CS over a G87 unless the intent is to build a track weapon and even then the G87 engine and platform has much more potential. The F87 is yesterday’s news but that can be tough to swallow.

Not trying to knock the looks, it's a beautiful car, but has very soft lines and flowy curves. It's a feminine looking car, that's not a bad thing.

If you assume people are knocking the looks of the car just because they say it looks feminine it says more about your fragility than the car.

Thoughts/Opinions:
The front looks better in person than in pictures, but I’m still not a big fan
The rear actually looks worse in person
It’s a very blocky/chunky design…it still looks a bit like a prototype to me
Side view and 3/4s views are both excellent
CF roof looks nice
Interior is light years ahead of the F87

(The “Bavarian Window Works” randomly driving by in one of the pictures is hilarious) 😆
BG has looked a lot more washed out in photos lately than I realized it would. But like ZB that's not how it looks in person.
