He comes out and washes her windows, checks her oil, just opens the radiator cap and looks in (no explosion), then pumps about ten cents of gas and...click, full. She hands him a quarter and waits for change, then gives him a nickel tip. He respectfully accepts, nods, shuts the hood and wipes where he touched, and she drives off as he waves.

"She's been coming here for fill-up once a week when she goes five blocks for groceries...for the last 20 years. (That's why the radiator was cold.) If I'm ever sick that's how she's treated".

It was nice to see the old way...the right way...

You must be from New Jersey. My dad used to pump gas too. Later in life, every time we made it back home, he would hop out and make small talk with the station attendants while they pumped his gas.

Great story you shared!

It's complicated. I need to talk it through with the surgeon next week when I go in for measurements. I have multifocal contact lenses now. My prescription has been pretty consistent over the past few years but recently I'm having all kinds of issues due to the progression of the cataracts. So we need to figure what my vision really is. The problem with the lenses is you can't try them for a week and tweak if you don't like them.

I have two different types of cataracts; nuclear and cortical and astigmatism on top of that.

I had a great doctor, so it went well. A good doctor will make a big difference. I've heard of doctors being 'rough.' Was recovered completely in a couple weeks.

A blurring can happen a year or so later and a laser procedure is required. Had that done, was painless. The whole thing, cataract surgery and laser procedure, were painless.

The story of the past 12 months for me. Two family members and two closely related folks. Two to COVID, one to cancer, one to a combination of old age + not being able to continue to be active due to this damned bug.

My uncle gave me his fancy reel to reel in the early 70's. Was great format till cassettes proved more convenient.

I remember being my Dad's antenna, holding the rabbit ears a certain way so we could get a channel that he wanted to watch.

Sorry for your losses. It's been such a terrible year for everyone.

I can't wait to get them done. It seems like it came out of nowhere. I've had a hard time driving in the dark for a while but this winter it became almost impossible. I'm blinded by headlights and now even sunlight with sunglasses on. Additionally, I feel like I'm living in a grey cloud. Nothing is clear and my very close vision is really bad. It's very depressing. I feel like I aged 10 years this year.

Don't worry. Get the surgery and your eyes will be better than they were. I was nearsighted before and my doctor put two different lenses in my eyes. The left one is for distance and the right is for close-up. Depending on what I'm looking at, my brain dictates which eye I use. It took a little bit to get used to it but now it works very naturally. I used to wear glasses and now I don't need them. Very happy with the results and you will be too. Mine were done more than ten years ago and I hear now there are newer and better lenses so yours should work better than mine. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I forget what they call this method - I tried that with my contacts a few years back. I was fine if I was looking straight ahead, or reading something but I had a problem driving with my peripheral vision. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I appreciate it.
