It’s equestrian season here right now. Polo and show horses.

haha thank you! I swear she is shrinking with age. She used to be so much more muscular and at least an inch or two taller. At this point, she's just a pasture ornament/expensive lawn mower, so she's lost so much muscle. But she's earned it. I'll never sell her.

I bet. You live in a prime area for winter equestrian sports.

it happens to humans too lol
horse is an elegant animal, and very expensive to have one as a pet.

I always tell my friends, the cheapest purchase is the actual horse itself, lol

My girls go through more shoes than I do at this point.

When I used to show competitively, Blackie would get her feet trimmed and re-shod every 6-8 weeks. Her hooves have always been kept long as she has really sensitive feet. If they are trimmed too short, she goes lame until they grow out. It's like clipping your finger nail too short and it hurts for a while, so I got lucky with her as to not need a trim every 4 weeks like a lot of show horses (and I've tried every supplement and hoof hardener under the sun, she just has sensitive feet, so the farrier recommends to keep them long). Now, since adulting and parenting has gotten in the way, the girls get their feet done about every 8- 10 weeks since they aren't ridden but a handful of times a year now.

Right now, in the winter, it's pellet feed x2 a day, and then supplemented with alfalfa for extra protein and energy. They're also out to pasture 24/7 right now and can graze all day/night with what little grass there is. They also get hay flakes at night after their evening feed since the grass isn't growing hardly.

In the spring/summer months it's pellet feed x2 a day and out to pasture for grazing.

Pretty simple. The show season is a whole other monster. More supplements than an old man takes at breakfast time.

I grew up next door to a horse farm, and the guy who owned it was a farrier. I used to help him during the summers back in high school. It was really cool to see the process, how hooves were trimmed, etc, and I learned a ton about horses. They are expensive to care for, but very intelligent animals with their own unique personalities.

My border collie is about to turn 16. I have to carry him down the stairs now as he can go up stairs but not down.

It really was the best thing my mom did for me as a child. Once you're in the horse world, there's no time to do anything else. No time to get in trouble or hang out with the wrong crowd at school, etc. It will teach her confidence, patience, trust, it's just an amazing world to be a part of. She is going to get thrown, she is going to get bit and stepped on, but as long as she gets back in the saddle, that's all that matters.

And may I suggest if you plan on buying a horse for her, lease before you buy! We leased Blackie 3 years before my mom finally bought her for me.

I like Miska. Doesn't that mean "little bear" in another language? I feel like I've heard that before.
