Not sure what direct view angle of the rear of the G87 is going to save the design.Only a view incorporating the side of the vehicle is going to hopefully improve the look of the car.

The F87 looks good in any pic of the rear IMO.
Agreed

Here's mine…

are tiny trunk spoilers a necessary afterthought ( like dynamic lifting wings) on the initial trunk lid design due to tweaking aero? At times it looks tacked on and breaks the sculpture....

That's naked in the picture. Looks like it's missing the diffuser add-on.

No vents on the E85’s in 2008, nor the E39 in 2003. No badges or designs of any kind, since e28, e30, e34 days I suppose. I’m ok with throwbacks to the classics though. Sometimes less is more, no?

Form follows function. The Gurney flap is no exception to that.

This is probably the most hideous M car I have ever seen. Looks like a Chinese knock off M version. I hope this is just bad angles.

Thank you for that. I was curious why the gurney in effect could not be integrated into the sculpture of the trunk lid as opposed to ' attaching ' after. I've heard (armchair?) engineers state it's a way to compensate for rushed tail design due to time constraints (this is not a slight to the addition ) I was genuinely curious as to the decision to ' tack ' as opposed to ' integrate '

I think the rest of the car for the most part would grow on me BUT How could anyone sign off on that rear. Actually you just agreed with me.

The E46 M3 did, the E36 M3 did not. That's 20 years.

Same thing with the E39 M5.

E39 ended in 2003.
E36 ended in 1999.

So yeah, the side gills have been around for 4 generations of the M3 and 3 generations of the M5. That's the majority of the generations of both cars.

BMW obviously doesn't care about heritage or they wouldn't have gotten ride of the Hofmeister kink on the G series. And that design cue has been around even longer.

The rear is a little weird for sure, but I love the rest of it.
I have a G80, and I despised that car upon its release. Drove one, modded it and it's my favorite daily ever.

I will take the new M2 and make it look awesome. like with the G80. most people will get used to the G87 and eventually start liking it.

I like the old school boxiness of it. it's supposed to be a nod to the E30 and I think they're not doing terribly at capturing that

I honestly don't like that sky blue on it, if the bumper was different and the kidney grilles had separation from the grille areas like previous generations(some now too!) w a silver or carbon fiber it would be nice. Also that M wrap makes it honestly look a lot better lmao can't lie, but just like the G8x certain colors will make it look great.

The "M-Performance" parts version looks to be quite radical with cutting lines integrated in to the fenders... perhaps the simplicity of the "Pure" with provide a deeper contrast to the openings and vents in the other

..need to find the camo pic with all the flair

FWIW: digging this up from 2015. Back then, "M gills" were coined as, uh, one of the "well-known design icons":
