I think that you hit the nail on the head.

Dealers know availability is going to be a huge issue and don't see any point to run up miles on an HEA instead of converting it to profit.

Many buyers forced to wait too long will lose interest and many will buy something else.

I was told the guy who initially ordered the M240ix that I own, walked away when it was inbound because they bought an Alfa instead of waiting. It was the color I wanted and had every available option, more than i would have ordered, but I was happy to take it.

Got one for the Good Dealer list....

BMW of Kansas City South.

Back in mid March found an "in transit" (as it was described on the dealer's web site) M2 (ZB, 6-speed, carbon fiber roof) stickered for $68,195 with an admin fee of $399.

Started the buying process. Long story short some back and forth but I got a quote with all the blanks filled in: What I was buying. What I was paying. My trade in. What I was being allowed for a trade in value.

(Back and forth was mainly some dealer added options: Door guards, window tint, nitrogen filled tires all I refused.)

The quote ended up at $68,195 plus the $399 admin fee.

Was emailed a copy of this quote. I double checked the info. Wrote on it that along with the trade in I would write a check on my bank for the balance. I made it clear I was not going to pay MO sales tax. (Where I live in Arkansas I have 30 days in which to assess the car, pay sales tax (on just what I wrote a check for), register the car and then surrender the manufacturer's title and wait approx. 30 days for an Arkansas title.

As requested I signed/dated the document.

There was a request for a $2000 *partial payment*. Oh, and a copy of my Arkansas driver's license and a copy of my BMW 2022 230i (which would be my trade in). So I added my AMEX credit card info.

Scanned the necessary documents in and sent them via an email. Was contacted all was ok. This was March 17.

Some days later I noticed the $2000 partial payment had not been charged to my AMEX credit card. Contacted the CA and asked if there was a problem? CA said he'd look into this. Not long after I got a text message from AMEX a large purchase, $2000, had been made against the card.

The car was at the port (Baltimore) and was in processing. Then after a time was assigned to a trucking company. But it had not transitioned to in transit.

Finally I noticed the car was in transit. Then a few days later it arrived at the dealer.

Contacted the dealer last Wednesday asking when I could come up and finish buying the car. Crickets. Thought oh oh...

Drove 200 miles to the dealer Thursday and walked into the showroom and spotted the car with a Sold sign. Did not have my trade in. So I was in and out like a ghost.

Then yesterday around 10:30am received a call from the sales director asking me when I wanted to come up and buy the car? Worked out an early afternoon appointment. Showed up at 2pm with my trade in, title, check book and after 2 hours was driving away in my 2023 BM2 M2.

Bottom line is my dealership experience I think clearly qualifies this dealer as belonging in the *Good* category. Was one of the top 3 maybe top 2 best car buying experiences ever.

BMW of Long Beach in California wants markup to be on the waiting list, and told me BMW won't release any allocations until 2024.

That's the sort of dealer that gives good dealers a bad name, and the good dealers pay a price for it every single day.

Wish manufacturers would yank franchises from the low hanging fruit and give them to those with a proven track record, even if they've never sold the brand before.

Uh oh! Is Arrowhead having a hard time selling their cars? Email I just received,

"There is revised pricing on the M2 Coupe, please call me and let me know....Just following up with you to see if you possibly had any thoughts or questions whatsoever that I could help with? If so, I would absolutely love to help! Please let me know if there is anything I can do, and I'll look forward to speaking with you soon."

Fields BMW of Winter Park, Florida Highly Recomended
Ask for Dennis in sales and Chris for a Service Advisor.
No issues. MSRP and no add-ons. Dennis is a straight shooter and the best sales person I have ever worked with. Had the first done at 900 miles and again, all was good.

Went to the Fields on a Saturday morning (2/18/23) after having talked to Dennis earlier in the week. He had just came out of a sales meeting and I asked about purchasing a M240i and then trading it down the road for an M2. He said that they just found out that they have one coming in and can I drive a stick? I said yes and Dennis said you have 5 minutes to decide ... and that is how I got my M2. Was handed the key at 9:33am 4/18/23.

I’m patiently waiting on my allocation at my local dealership, I am number 4 they only expect 2 in 2023. I found almost nearly my exact build at a dealership in CA (TR instead of BSM); so I inquired about it. However once the dealership noted my area code was from out of state - they refused to sell the car to me and were very condescending about it…I thought that was really odd they said it was their dealership policy.

No big deal to me, I can wait it out and would rather help out my local Client Advisor after that experience anyway.

Other than the condescending part, this is normal. My dealership was not selling EVs out of state while we had a waiting list. Those were reserved for local customers.

Bought a 6mt at Mount Laurel NJ yesterday.
They asked for 10K markup. After giving them some manufactured outrage, bought it at 5K markup. One of two lot cars.
They still have a gray automatic.
Traded in 2018 F80. Loved that car.

After passing up an HEA ZB locally, I just wasn’t sure about ZB before I saw it. Once I saw one I loved it. Found one in Kentucky and brought it home Saturday. 600 miles to home, still love it. The blue is just gorgeous.

Don Jacobs in Lexington was great to deal with, a couple negatives but nothing serious. Great staff and a pleasure to complete the transaction.

Wildest interaction coming home was a kid hanging out a car window filming us on the road.

It’s growing on me, both the flashy blue color and the design.
Absolutely loved my tuned F80. But with few minor issues popping up and approaching 50k miles, I felt it was time. Wish I had the means to keep it as a track car.
M2 is a more refined and comfortable ride compared to F80, which was a violent beast. M2 feels a little slower, but I think it’s subjective based on overall ride comfort. Plus I’m supposed to be taking it easy during break in.

If only BMW made my perfect car:
X-drive M3/M4 in a manual competition.

Agree, Long Beach sucks. I bought 2 cars from them and thought I had a decent relationship, but my old CA left. Told them I didn’t need to be first on the block. They told me 10k market adjustment back in September. I asked to confirm with their GM, Jason Warren if they were interested in long term customers or not. They don’t care, market adjustment matters more to them.

I’m in no real rush. Going to drive it in a few weeks at another dealer to make sure I like. Then I’ll get more serious about finding an allocation.

Add it to the mental list of places to never buy a car from. It blows my mind how short-sighted some dealers can be. 5k now or a lifetime of BMW purchases?

This just turned ugly.

The car arrived to the dealership yesterday evening. I was just notified by Eric Bowen that they sold the car to a local customer from under me and will be refunding my deposit.

As mentioned above, I have a $2500 deposit down, as well as a deal sheet with all terms. This is an AutoNation dealership.

Gutted.
