So true. They probably wouldn't even notice a BMW with a AMG badge on it

Dealership gave me a X1 20d as a loaner today and it's got the little M badge on the front quarter panels...

Dear BMW. ... STOP IT!,,

I couldn't snap a picture while driving, but I saw the elusive 7 series M7 yesterday. Beautiful.

I guess in that instance you are talking about variants of the same model vs completely different models. The GTS is a variant of the M4, so putting GTS parts on a non-GTS m4 is viewed as ok by most. A 328/335 is not an M3/M4 so putting m3/m4 badges on it is viewed as a no-no. It should also be noted that there is a difference between simply adding the cosmetic parts of a different variant/model to your car vs actually adding the misleading badges. Adding an M3 style front bumper to your 328i is ok but putting an M3 badge on it is not.

Thats my take any way

Agreed, I draw the line at the badge. Adding M3 parts to a 3 series is fine, but re-badging it an M3 is not.

Thinking of changing all my M4 badges (side vents, front grill, rear emblem) and coding my dash to M3. Of course I would change the door sills to the illuminated M Performance ones. Then it can be like the olden days to say its an M3 Coupé! Would I still be faking it? Technically? Lol

Lol, I love these threads

The hilarious part of all of this is on them. True enthusiasts (or people who know what an //M car is) can spot a fake badge/car a mile away.
The people they are trying to fool most (the general public) most likely have no idea or care what //M even is. All they know is BMW is a BMW.

So in essence you gain nothing, other than being the laughing stock among people who know their cars and the community.

I'll never understand why people do this. If it's to feel good about themselves and rock the M badge, then rock it and don't be a poser. Nothing wrong with a nice 340/440i either.

But people will be people. Thanks for keeping me amused

Spotted possibly the first oil burning M to show up after extensive testing at the Nürburgring

In hindsight, this could be just the m-tech version

At least it's not an M3 badge. And I have heard of some of the "M-Sport" designated models like this coming from the dealer with the M badge added, although looks like this guy went to town...
