Lat night was my brother's 40th party at my house.

I have this old "jug" that I bought filled with maple syrup. Once we used it up, I took a sharpie and wrote "Hooch" on the outside. Family was begging me for shots, but I didn't have any tequila, so I broke out the Hooch. I couldn't remember what I had actually poured in there. I took the first sip. It was initially quite smooth, then there was this horrible attack on my taste buds.

My cousin was paying anyone who could take a gulp and not grimace $5.

I couldn't remember what it was, but somehow thought it was some variation of moonshine. This morning when the alram went off at 0530, I remembered!!! Buffalo Trace, White Dog.

OMG - I tried that stuff (the exact same brand even) and it was so bad I thought it had permanently jacked up my taste buds - took me 3 days to get that nasty yeasty taste out. Like Zima on steroids. I'd read all this stuff about how cool it was to try the raw distillate at the distillery, but now I'm ready to hand a nobel prize to whoever thought up barrel aging. Took me 3 years to offload the bottle, even for free (fortunately just a 375, not a full 750).

It hasn't been quite 3 years, and I don't know how much is left in the Hooch at this point.

I drank one whole 375 bottle mixed with Diet Coke, but I just couldn't get thru this one.

I tried that same stuff at the Buffalo Trace distillery this past June and yeah it's pretty awful. Really shows how much the barrel does for the flavor of the whiskey.

You really will be torn if you mix those (at least some parts of yr anatomy) - I'd get two Abunadh (or if you want other barrel-proofs, some fav's are Ardbeg Corryvecchan or Uigeadeal, Laphroaig 10yo Cask Strength). For me, un-chill-filtered versions make more difference than the barrel proof, but they often go together.

I have a bottle of the A'bunada...I'm not crazy about it as much as I am the regular 12. Not sure if I should be adding water to it like it says, or what

I just go neat. I like it as much for the cask-strength as the taste.

I'd recc that you always add at least a few drops of water to single malt - it does s/t chemically to release more flavor (doesn't need to be anywhere near enough to bring a cask strength back down to 40 proof). To me, this is unique to scotch, bourbon is often better neat.

If I’m not mistaken, the bottle itself says to add water. Swear I saw it somewhere...

Yes, many of them tell you this in the ad copy. Sometimes they suggest 'brit style' which is to add a LOT of water (like 3:1, often diluting it down to about 30proof IIRC) - to me, that is way over-watered, but they drink it that way more like a soda than a sipping dram (an old habit from when the alcohol was to kill off the bacteria in the water). I find different brands vary in how much to add to hit the sweet spot, but most all of them improve.

Here's to happy hour!

Sipping on my first Irish whiskey in three or four months. Wolfhound. Good stuff, just not a fan of the slight ginger aftertaste. Very smooth and balanced outside of the ginger thing.

Thumbs up

Releasing in very linted quantities. And I must have!

Just spoke with my local store and they are expecting a handful and will hold a couple for me.
