I live in a condo and my garage space is shared. It's two garages joined together with a partition in the middle. Each side has two spots. I own one entire side of the garage and park in the middle. Anyway there's a common back door entrance which just so happens to be on my side of the garage. One of the neighbors keeps using it, don't know which one of the two it could be. This irritates me because its a tight squeeze to walk around my car and I'm worried they might scratch my car or possible damage it hauling stuff.
The real part that ticks me off is this SOB whichever neighbor it might be never locks the back door. I come out to my car everyday only to see the door unlocked. I have items of value and of course my car in there. I put up a sign on door the 3 days ago that says "PLEASE LOCK THE DOOR BEHIND YOU". Nothing has changed, they still leave the door unlocked. What are my options? I don't even know which ahole it is but I'm starting to have thoughts of busting up the lock altogether so they can't get in through the back door. ![]() |

I thought about that but then it would be obvious that there's a new lock. I want to keep it on the down low, don't want someone to key my car or anything. This is the BS position I'm in. It's driving me nuts.

Leave a laptop with a webcam recording in your car one night. Once you find out who it is, ask them politely to do whatever it is you're asking.
Tell them that if they leave the door open they're liable for whatever happens to your car. ![]() |

1. Do you need the back entrance?
2. Is your landlord cool? 3. How do people get from your side to their side?

The first thing I would do is talk to your neighbors. They are more likely to lock the door once someone confronts them about it and has a resonable reason to ask that they do this. Your not asking for something difficult.
If not, then... If you live in a condo, then you must have a condo association. Report your issue to them. If this is a common and/or shared area then they must have some authority over it. Have them send letters to your neighbors or request one of the board members to personally talk to them if you don't want to talk to your neighbors first. I'm on the board at my complex and residents ask us to do things like this all the time when they don't want to do it themselves. Good luck. |

Well to keep it "locked" just install a door knob that has one of those buttons you can press that makes the handle always locked from the inside.. Meaning, they can get out, but won't be able to get back in without a key.
If the door doesn't shut on it's own, then add a door closer (hydraulic actuator/spring loaded hinge) to it so that it will. But, the First thing I'd do though is have a face to face talk with them about it. Do your neighbors own? Or are they just renters? If they are owners too, you'd think that they'd care about their stuff getting stolen/damaged as much as you do. The fact that they don't means most likely that they are renters... not much you can do accept contact the actual owner/association and see if they can pressure them into following the rules. We looked at a couple of those places (shared garages) when we bought our place and FWIW am happy that we passed and got something with a private garage. Not sure what the fascination in Chicago is with this type of parking arrangement, but the architects really have a hard-on for drawing up garages that are shared in this town. |

Just approach them about it. Most likely they will stop. Don't sound weak though otherwise they will be fuck you and continue.
I live an appartment and the guy that lives above me kept throwing his cigarette buts down on my porch. I picked them all up and took them upstairs and asked him nicely to keep his butts to himself. I haven't seen any since. |
