Lol. Think we have to wait for BMW. I cannot imagine any experimental drilling to see that the roof is simply not designed to take a rack.
Those markings on this photo don't seem to relate to the rack actually so I stand corrected. (See faint dimples all along the roof and actual holes for some reason now missing) Can someone do a scaled measure of the holes in this photo and see where that would align to the centre of the flaps on an actual car? Purpose would be to see if the holes are there and just hidden because the flaps are in the wrong place, or absent completely. Going from the mini barcode and the photo of the red car above it would seem to be entirely missing. Maybe BMW had too many roof stress fractures or failures during manufacturing with the holes or something? Last edited by crypticc; 10-05-2014 at 06:04 AM.. |

Mission: (CFRP) with Roof Rack
Ok guys & gals and Bimmer freaks. My mission this year is to have BMW make a AWD version of the M4 & M3 as an option for whom ever desires it. My other mission is to get BMW to remedy the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Roof to have functioning roof mechanisms to mount a luggage rack if so desired as I feel all BMW's should always have that cool feature.
I was able to get BMW to finally make black rims for the M4 & M3 so we don't have to spend our weekends painstakingly washing our wheels and well because I like black wheels. Also another accomplishment was to get BMW to offer as a Special Edition a matte black and gray paint finish. And they did so, it came out better then expected in satin Frozen Black & Silver as a "Factory Custom" option. And also to offer the satin paint finishes in the future as an special individual option. Boom done, check those boxes off!!! Now here it is time to get this factory redesigned and production fixed for all that potentially want to install a roof rack so we can do other things just as fast. By the way guys BMW does read these forums, so we have to keep on them and keep the topic up front and center until it is taken care of for both roof options, I still want a (CFRP) Roof but could live with a metal roof minus the moonroof option but that would be a compromise I don't want to make. I'll supply some liquid courage if anyone is on the fence about getting their drill out

I'm sure that once you get the car, you won't care much about the steel roof. In fact, you might end up loving the extra light & ventilation. But... there might still be a solution. All hope is not lost. Yet anyway.

For me making the order, I am cool with it, I wanted CF, but I can live with the roof, but others that bought and now can not install.... I would be upset about that. |

I really like the sunroof on my M4. The extra light in a black interior is great and the tilt ventilation when parked in the hot Texas sun is a great benefit. It may not be "the cool" solution, but it is a cool solution.

Awesome, that is my car in the 3rd pic. I hope this rack issue is resolved by the time I go to upgrade my e90 m3. Would be a big disappointment to have to get the moonroof to get the rack option.

What about the suction type mounts? Has anyone tried them on carbon fiber roofs? I know the work on painted metal.
